Artists will need our help after this coronavirus nightmare 03/14/2020

“As we come to terms with the severe impact that this will have on our organization, I ask you to consider that those who will be most directly affected by these cancellations are the artists. They are at the heart of what we value and support as an organization and they are facing a prolonged period of serious financial hardship. For many of them, as independent contractors, there is currently little to no public safety net to help them through this sort of disaster scenario.”

Artists, please keep an eye on new notices from the Government of Canada on financial releif available for those impacted by COVID-19.

Patrons, thank you for supporting the arts. Please consider keeping that ticket, and donating your money to these arts organizations which depend on your patronage.

Stay strong, and stay smart friends ♡
Message Troubadour if you need a friend to talk. We are here to help xoxoxo

Artists will need our help after this coronavirus nightmare The many cancellations are worrying for cultural organizations and the people they employ, but particularly for artists, essentially freelance workers, who often live precarious financial lives

We want YOU (to answer some questions)!
¿ 🤔 ? 🤔 ¿ 🤔 ?

The responses are rolling in, but we still want to hear from YOU! We are creating a new format to respond anonymously via an online form, which will be released soon. Keep an eye on the horizon for that if you are feeling uncomfy responding as yourself. We want honesty - without it we cannot address the issues at stake in the performing arts!

Please remember to share these questions with your performing arts friends and fam!

WE WANT YOU (to answer some questions)!

We are busy developing our first season, and we want your input! For the next few weeks, we’ll be asking you via social media and our website about the highs and lows of your performing life. After all, this is a project created by artists for artists, and while we can't solve all problems (we can dream!), we sure can provide a safe and supportive environment to talk about them.

Describe...

ONE time where you felt under-supported working in the performing arts

TWO of the most difficult things about working in the performing arts

THREE things that you love most about working in the performing arts

It’s questions like these that will fuel where we take our discussions. What impacts you the most, whether it’s positive or negative, is exactly what we should be talking about. So, let’s hear it!

We welcome all forms of response - Facebook Messenger, comments, posts to either the Troubadour Project Facebook or Instagram profiles (don’t forget to tag us!), Instagram story responses, email, carrier pigeon, morse code. Whatever is most comfortable and convenient for you.

We encourage vulnerability, and we recognize some of this information may be sensitive, so if you wish to remain anonymous, just let us know. :)

Without furthur ado... Happy typing!

And share these questions with your performing arts crew!

After all, this is a project created by artists for artists, and while we can't solve all problems (we can dream!), we sure can provide a safe and supportive environment to talk about them.

Have there been times when you felt undersupported in your career or your life? Is the travel or schedule really tricky to manage with your partner/family? Could you have used more resources for support at a critical time in your life? Have you struggled with underrepresentation or misrepresentation of your culture or identity? In short: what are some of the things that really bother you about working in the industry?

We also want to hear about all the amazing things you love about your work! What really cranks your gears? Maybe you feel on fire when you're on stage. Maybe finding that perfect way to stage a scene is the best high you can think of. Maybe you love the fact that your rehearsal schedule lets you sleep in past 9 AM, because you’re not a morning person!

It’s questions like these that will fuel where we take our discussions. What impacts you the most, whether it’s positive or negative, is exactly what we should be talking about. So, let’s hear it!

Welcome to Troubadour Project! We’re so excited to be starting this journey, and we hope you’ll join us! But first, a quick introduction.

As participants in the performing arts, we come together for brief pockets of time to work, then part ways. We become part of a paradoxically disconnected community.

But what if we changed that?

What if we practiced our community? What if we created a space where we could get together, outside of the job and after the show is over, and reconnect with friends and colleagues old and new. Be together—in person—and chat about the highs and lows of the unique industry we work in. Hang out, laugh, and help each other grow.

That's what Troubadour Project is all about. Our mission is to foster within each artist a connection to a community which will support and enhance their individual well-being and their work. We envision a future where we can create positive change within the performing arts through collective artist empowerment.

In short, let’s start taking care of each other.

Starting next season, we will be hosting our first meetings in Toronto. And we want you to get involved.

In the meantime, keen an eye on our website and social media pages for exciting updates. Feel free to get in touch directly, follow us on Facebook (Troubadour Project) on Instagram , or simply send us some good vibes.

A little bit about us...

What we see

The performing artists of today face increasing pressure to produce more with less resources. There is a rising trend in artist burnout, stress, and diagnoses of depression and anxiety. Companies and artists alike are under the financial strain of ever increasing costs in some of Canada’s most expensive cities.

On the bright side, toxic workplace environments within the performing arts are now being challenged. Systems that were in lockstep with antiquity are finally being disrupted. And while these changes are happening, more is needed for the performing arts to thrive and grow into the future.

Artists are the earth in which we grow our culture. They are the beginning of the entire process. With this philosophy, what better way to progress the performing arts industry than by enriching the artists themselves. Contrary to the notion that artists need to suffer to create, we believe that whole, healthy, invigorated artists are the key to real innovation and creativity.
