Umaylam Toronto Condemns China’s New “Ethnic Unity and Progress Law”

We strongly condemn the People’s Republic of China’s newly enacted “Ethnic Unity and Progress Law,” which further institutionalizes policies aimed at assimilating non-Han nationalities and eroding their distinct cultural, linguistic, and religious identities.

While presented as a measure to promote unity, this law deepens concerns that the Chinese government is expanding efforts to reshape the identities of Tibetans and other ethnic peoples through state-directed assimilation. Genuine unity cannot be achieved through coercion, cultural homogenization, or restrictions on the free expression of one’s heritage and beliefs.

As supporters of the Middle Way Approach, we seek a peaceful and mutually beneficial solution through genuine autonomy for the Tibetan people within the framework of the People’s Republic of China. Such autonomy must include meaningful protections for Tibet’s unique language, culture, religion, environment, and way of life, as guaranteed under China’s own Constitution and laws.

We call upon the Chinese government to respect the fundamental rights of the Tibetan people and all ethnic communities, and we urge the international community to closely examine the implications of this legislation for human rights, cultural preservation, and religious freedom.

True harmony is built on respect, dignity, and diversity and not enforced conformity.
