When the iPhone 14 range launched in September, I felt a giddy wave of excitement that Apple had done something new with the iPhone 14 Pro: the Dynamic Island.

After what seems like an age, Apple finally killed the infamous display notch (for the Pro iPhone at least) and added something that felt genuinely fresh and innovative. Using a cutout to add functionality rather than take up screen space struck me as rather smart.

But now that the dust has well and truly settled after the last Apple event, and iPhone 14 Pros are out in the wild, I still remain firmly fixed to my iPhone 13 Pro.
Now I'm in the fortunate position of being able to get the latest iPhone in for testing. But despite this, I've had no desire to upgrade; at best I'll sometimes take a curious look at Richard Priday's iPhone 14 Pro Max, but little more.
The reason for this is Apple simply hasn't done enough to warrant a no-brainer upgrade.

Look past the Dynamic Island and the design of the iPhone 14 Pro is basically the same as the iPhone 12 Pro. That's not terrible, as the flat-edge design brought in by former phone is great. But it's hardly the step change between say the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 5. With a new take on display features, Apple could have gone for a fresher design with the iPhone 14 Pro.

As for the 48MP main camera upgrade, which is a notable boost on the 12MP camera of the previous iPhone, it got my attention initially. But from further Tom's Guide testing, I'm not convinced it offers a huge upgrade over its predecessor; mainly because Apple's computational photography is so good.

The iPhone 14 Pro also outputs a 12MP image through the art of pixel binning, meaning in practical terms the photos it serves up aren't a huge step away from those of the 13 Pro. And if I wanted a high resolution camera I'd likely take out my Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra as I feel it has a more versatile camera system, or simply opt for my DSLR.

Video is great on iPhone, but I'm not convinced there's a huge step up from the iPhone 13 Pro to the 14 Pro.

Speaking of steps up, the iPhone 14 Pro has Apple's new A16 Bionic chip. It's a powerhouse, but I would bet a healthy sum that no one would notice the difference between it and the iPhone 13 Pro's A15 Bionic in everyday use; the older chip is still a speed demon.

Apple in October 2021 overhauled the high-end MacBook Pro, introducing a new design, new chips, new capabilities, and more. As Apple says, the revamped MacBook Pro models offer up extraordinary performance and the world's best notebook display.

The 2021 MacBook Pro models come in 14.2-inch and 16.2-inch size options and they're equipped with mini-LED displays, more ports, up to 64GB memory, and more powerful Apple silicon chips, the M1 Pro and M1 Max. In short, they are the best MacBook Pro models to date.

Apple's new MacBook Pro models can be configured with the M1 Pro chip or the M1 Max chip. Both chips feature a 10-core CPU with eight high-performance cores and two high-efficiency cores, though there is a lower-end 8-core model available for the entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro. There's also a 16-core Neural Engine in both chips.

The difference between the "Pro" and "Max" designation comes down to GPU performance. The M1 Pro features a 16-core GPU, while the M1 Max features a 32-core GPU, with a 24-core GPU also available as a middle-tier upgrade option. The M1 Pro also supports up to 32GB unified memory, while the M1 Max supports up to 64GB unified memory.

According to Apple, The CPU in the M1 Pro and Pro Max is up to 70 percent faster than the CPU in the M1. The GPU in the M1 Pro is up to 2x faster than the M1 and the GPU in the M1 Max is up to 4x faster than the M1. M1 Pro and Pro Max use a system-on-a-chip architecture like the M1, and the M1 Pro supports up to 200GB/s memory bandwidth and the M1 Max supports up to 400GB/s memory bandwidth.

The 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro models feature a Liquid Retina XDR display, which is a mini-LED display with up to 1000 nits sustained brightness, 1600 nits peak brightness, and a 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. The 14-inch MacBook Pro has a resolution of 3024-by-1964 at 254 pixels per inch, and the 16-inch model has a resolution of 3456-by-2234 at 254 pixels per inch.

Priced starting at $1,999 for the 14-inch model, the MacBook Pro offers a range of high-end features. If you don't need such a high level of performance, a wide range of ports, or features like the mini-LED display, there is the M2 MacBook Pro for $1,299.

fterAfter 14 years, three revisions, and two different processor architectures, the iconic wedge shape of the MacBook Air is now history. In its place is a MacBook Air with a completely new design that’s the same thickness from front to back. Virtually every aspect of the new MacBook Air has been updated or changed — it’s the biggest update to the Air since it originally debuted nearly a decade and a half ago.

These kinds of changes are a big deal because the Air is the default laptop option for millions of people. Beyond that, the Air sets the standard for thin and light laptops that every other manufacturer chases.

In addition to the design and hardware changes, this new Air has Apple’s latest in-house processor, the M2. It also comes with a higher price tag — it starts at $1,199, $200 more than the model that preceded it, and a model with a decent amount of storage runs $1,499 or more. As a result, Apple is keeping the prior M1 model in its lineup, specifically to provide an option for the many MacBook Air buyers that don’t want to spend much more than $1,000 on a new computer.
The M1 MacBook Air was (and still is) one of the most impressive laptops we’ve ever tested — Dieter Bohn called it “a triumph” at the time. That’s quite a bar to live up to, and with all of the changes Apple made to the M2 model, it’s fair to wonder if this new model can best the prior version.

The new MacBook Air borrows a lot of its design and shape from the MacBook Pro 14 and 16 that debuted late last year. It’s symmetrical and squared off, with a more brutalist presentation than prior MacBook Air models.

Yet it’s remarkably thin — just a smidge over 11 millimeters — and that thinness is immediately noticeable when you open the lid and start typing on it. It’s also noticed whenever you slot it into a bag or carry it around. The older MacBook Air’s tapered shape had less visual weight and may look thinner, but the new model is indeed slimmer than its predecessor.
It’s also slightly lighter, at 2.7 pounds vs. the older model’s 2.8. That’s not a huge difference, and the Air is far from the lightest computer you can buy, but it does make it extremely portable and easy to tote around wherever I need it.

Unless you get the new Midnight color. This new color is gorgeous out of the box, with a deep blue-black finish that can change depending on the light. But as soon as you pick it up, it gets covered in greasy fingerprints that are a chore to clean off. It really mars what is otherwise a striking finish. Apple’s far from the only company to face this problem with dark aluminum — Razer’s laptops have been fingerprint magnets for years — but it’s enough of an issue that I wouldn’t buy the Midnight model. I’ve also had the opportunity to test a model in the silvery-gold Starlight color, and its surface stays fingerprint-free.
