Dear friends,

The history of Iran is not just 2,500 years old; its roots go back over 12,000 years.

In a time when valuable parts of our country’s heritage are often ignored, overlooked, or even deliberately distorted, we have so far held 13 research sessions as part of the first phase of this project, out of 100 identified historical sites within present-day Iran, to revisit and study Iran’s remarkable history with a scientific, impartial, and meticulous approach. The mission of these sessions is to shed light on the hidden and untold aspects of Iran’s history.

We have been taught that Iranian history began with the Medes, while in reality, Elam ruled 2,661 years before the Medes, and thousands of years earlier, brilliant settlements and civilizations flourished in the Iranian plateau, playing an undeniable role in the development of regional and world civilization. Tepe Ganj Dareh, dating back nearly 12,000 years, provides some of the earliest evidence of goat domestication and rural life. Jiroft and Shahr-e Sukhteh, each over 5,000 years old, represent advanced ancient civilizations in eastern Iran. In Shahdad, a metal flag dating back around 4,500 years was discovered, the oldest known metal flag in the world. Iranian history is far richer than what formal education has taught us.

The tragic experience of Jiroft shows how ignorance can lead to disaster. Irreplaceable and invaluable artifacts that could have revealed new dimensions of Iran’s civilization were sold for mere pennies and remain forever unknown. Another example is Tepe Hessar in Damghan, partially damaged due to a railway line. Such disasters must not happen again. The only way to prevent them is through awareness and public education, so that people themselves become the first guardians of these treasures.

While neighboring countries like Iraq attract ten times more foreign archaeologists, in Iran the contributions of researchers are often underappreciated, and their efforts are not given the recognition they deserve. Yet Iran is more than any other country in the region in need of such dedicated work.

Studying history is not merely recounting the past; it teaches us how our ancestors confronted and overcame the challenges of their time. Their experiences can serve as a guiding light for our future.

This project is challenging, time-consuming, and costly, yet it is entirely nonprofit and without any personal or financial gain. Our sole goal is awareness, education, and the protection of Iran’s cultural heritage.

دوستان عزیز،

تاریخ ایران تنها ۲۵۰۰ سال نیست؛ ریشه‌های آن به بیش از ۱۲هزار سال پیش بازمی‌گردد.

در روزگاری که بخش‌های ارزشمند تاریخ گرانبهای سرزمین‌مان، گاه به عمد و گاه از روی سهل‌انگاری، نادیده گرفته شده یا حتی تحریف می‌شوند، ما در فاز نخست این پروژه تاکنون ۱۳ نشست پژوهشی از ۱۰۰ محوطه تاریخی شناسایی‌شده در داخل مرزهای کنونی ایران را برگزار کرده‌ایم تا با نگاهی علمی، بی‌طرفانه و موشکافانه، پیشینه‌ی شگفت‌انگیز ایران را بازخوانی و بازنگری کنیم. رسالت این نشست‌ها روشن ساختن زوایای تاریک و ناگفته‌های تاریخ ایران است.

به ما آموخته‌اند که تاریخ ایران با مادها آغاز می‌شود، در حالی‌که ایلام ۲۶۶۱ سال پیش از مادها پادشاهی داشته و هزاران سال پیش از آن، در نجد ایران سکونتگاه‌ها و تمدن‌هایی شکل گرفته بود که نقشی انکارناپذیر در بنیان‌گذاری تمدن‌های منطقه‌ای و جهانی داشتند. تپه گنج‌دره با قدمتی نزدیک به ۱۲هزار سال، یکی از نخستین شواهد اهلی‌سازی بز و زندگی روستایی است. جیرفت و شهر سوخته هرکدام با بیش از ۵هزار سال قدمت، بخشی از تمدن‌های درخشان شرق ایران را نشان می‌دهند. و در شهداد، پرچم فلزی‌ای مربوط به حدود ۴۵۰۰ سال پیش, قدیمی‌ترین پرچم فلزی شناخته‌شده جهان است. تاریخ ایران بسیار فراتر از آن چیزی است که در نظام آموزشی رسمی به ما آموخته‌اند.

تجربه‌ی تلخ جیرفت نشان داد که چگونه ناآگاهی می‌تواند فاجعه‌آفرین باشد. آثار بی‌مانند و گرانبهایی که می‌توانستند زوایای تازه‌ای از تمدن ایران را آشکار کنند، به بهای اندک به تاراج رفتند و برای همیشه ناشناخته باقی ماندند. یا تپه حصار دامغان که بخشی از آن بر اثر عبور خط آهن آسیب جدی دید. این فجایع نباید دوباره تکرار شوند. تنها راه جلوگیری از آن‌ها، آگاهی‌بخشی و آموزش همگانی است تا مردم خود حافظان نخستین این گنجینه‌ها باشند.

در حالی‌که در کشورهای همسایه مانند عراق، باستان‌شناسان خارجی ده‌ها برابر بیشتر جذب و حمایت می‌شوند، در ایران گاه نه‌تنها از حضور و خدمات این پژوهشگران استقبال کافی نمی‌شود، بلکه حتی قدرشناسی شایسته‌ای از آنان به عمل نمی‌آید. این در حالی است که ما بیش از هر کشور دیگری در منطقه، شایسته و نیازمند چنین همکاری‌هایی هستیم.

مطالعه تاریخ تنها بازگویی گذشته نیست؛ بلکه به ما می‌آموزد که نیاکانمان چگونه با چالش‌های زمانه‌ی خود روبه‌رو شدند و آن‌ها را حل کردند. تجربه‌های آنان می‌تواند چراغی برای راه آینده‌ی ما باشد.

این پروژه کاری است دشوار، زمان‌بر و پرهزینه، اما کاملاً غیرانتفاعی و بدون هیچ منفعت شخصی یا مالی. تنها هدف ما آگاهی‌بخشی، آموزش و حفاظت از میراث فرهنگی ایران است.

It was with deepest sorrow and sadness to hear about the loss of my Mentor, my dear friend and my previous employer professor Barry Sampson. Eight years ago I had the privilege to work for one of best architects and persons I had the chance to know and work with in Toronto. Barry and I worked very closely on a few projects that I am still proud of to this day. It was very difficult to deliver him the notice that I wanted to leave the office in December that year and he mentioned that he was hoping I would stay and to be put in partnership path...
Today was specially sad and difficult to wake up to the news. Rest In Peace professor Sampson; you will be in mind and hearts of so many who love you ❤️❤️❤️
