Meet Yamada Torajiro, a Japanese in Turkish Garb. How? Here’s the story:

In 1890, a typhoon hit the Ottoman frigate, Ertuğrul, on its way to Turkey from Japan, causing it to crash into the rocky Japanese coast.

Japan rallied to the aid of the families of hundreds of sailors who lost their lives in the tragedy, and Yamada Torajiro, was responsible for transporting these donations from Japan to Istanbul.

He was soon allowed to open a store in Istanbul displaying Japanese exports. In turn, he slowly became an economic ambassador between the two nations.

He used his experience in both lands to promote them both extensively to each other, thus facilitating trade between the Japanese Empire and the late Ottoman Empire.

He is considered to have laid the foundation of Japanese-Turkish relations and was one of the first Japanese people to convert to Islam and make the Hajj to Mecca.

He, apparently, lived well into the 1950s and his memoir appeared in 1957.
