A Georgia mother says her nonverbal son with autism came home from school with injuries following an incident involving a teacher at Richmond Hill Primary School in Richmond Hill, Georgia.

The incident happened on Monday, September 14, according to a Bryan County Sheriff’s Office report.

Krista Glover said she noticed a mark on her son’s lip and scratches on his arms after picking him up from school. Because her son is nonverbal, she says he could not tell her what had happened.

Glover contacted the school and sent photos of the injuries to her son’s teacher. She was later called to the school, where administrators showed her surveillance footage of the incident.

According to the sheriff’s office report, the student was being escorted back to his classroom when he grabbed the teacher’s hair and would not let go. The report alleges the teacher then grabbed the child by both hands, lifted and swung him, and later grabbed the back of his shirt and pushed him toward the ground.

The report states that the teacher did not initially report the incident. It was discovered after the child’s mother noticed the injuries and contacted the school. Surveillance footage reportedly confirmed the incident.

According to the report, the teacher acknowledged they should have handled the situation differently and said they were trained in a crisis management technique but did not follow proper protocol. The teacher also said they did not believe they had injured the child.

The teacher was asked to leave the school, and the case was referred to investigators. A separate child welfare report was also filed.

Glover said she feels guilty because she sent her son to school believing he would be safe and come home okay.

“I’m supposed to protect him,” she said.

A Tennessee family is suing a school district after their 5-year-old son with autism was criminally charged following incidents at school.

The child was enrolled in kindergarten at H.B. Williams Elementary in Sumner County. According to the lawsuit, his parents had requested additional support for him, but the school initially declined, saying it needed more information before providing an aide.

After several incidents involving physical altercations and objects being thrown, the district eventually assigned additional support.

But by then, the situation had escalated beyond the school.

A school resource officer charged the child with felony aggravated assault. A judge rejected the charge, but two parents of other students later filed their own petitions seeking criminal charges against the boy. One was eventually dropped, while the other continued.

The remaining case was ultimately dismissed in April after a judge determined that the child was not competent to stand trial.

The child’s parents are now taking legal action against Sumner County Schools, alleging violations of disability rights and federal anti-discrimination laws.

They are also suing a school administrator individually, alleging retaliation, malicious prosecution, abuse of process and other claims.

The family’s attorney argues that children with disabilities need appropriate support and intervention, particularly when behavioral challenges arise at school. He says the case could have broader implications for how schools respond to students with special needs.

The school district, district attorney and administrator were contacted for comment but had not responded at the time of the report.

A Minnesota police officer rushed into a pond on Monday, September 7, to save a 5 year old boy with autism who had wandered away from home and was struggling in the water.

St. Paul Police Officer Adisak Sae Ma arrived after good Samaritans spotted the child in the pond and called 911. Police had already deployed a drone to locate him.

When Officer Sae Ma arrived, he saw the boy treading water. He called out to him, but the child moved farther toward the deep end.

“I took off my gear, and I just went in there,” Sae Ma said.

Drone footage released by police shows the officer entering the water, reaching the child and safely carrying him back to shore.

The boy was taken to the hospital to be checked out and was reported to be safe.

Police say the child’s family told them he had wandered away from their home without their knowledge.

Sae Ma said he was afraid he wouldn’t reach the boy in time, recalling another call involving a child that did not end the same way.

This time, officers say a new automated drone program may have made the difference.

The drone reached the scene about two minutes before officers and was able to tell them exactly where the child was and that he was moving toward deeper water.

The rescue highlights the dangers of wandering for some children with autism and how quickly a situation can become life threatening.

Thankfully, this story ended with a child being brought safely home.

A non-verbal boy with autism left Southern Elementary School in Scott County, Kentucky, undetected Friday morning and made his way into a nearby neighborhood, where he entered a stranger’s home.

His mother said she handed him directly to a paraeducator during morning drop-off around 7:17 a.m. Four minutes later, at approximately 7:21 a.m., he had reportedly left the school through a door and reached the playground.

According to his mother, the boy remained on the playground for about 40 minutes without an adult before leaving the area and walking toward a neighboring community.

He eventually entered a couple’s home. The residents called 911 and kept the child safe until police arrived.

The mother said she was not informed about what had happened until after police had contacted the school.

She said her son has a history of elopement and that school staff were aware of the risk. He has an Individualized Education Program (IEP) and receives special education services.

Scott County Schools spokesperson Renee Holmes confirmed the incident, saying the student was located safely and that the principal spoke directly with his parents. The incident is now under investigation.

The mother said the school told her it would install a device on the swing door and provide additional training to staff.

She said she is seeking longer-term measures to ensure her son’s safety while receiving the educational services he needs.

A mother became emotional outside a Miami courtroom Wednesday as she continued pleading for leniency for her 21-year-old autistic daughter, whose battery case is moving forward despite a court-appointed psychologist finding her incompetent to stand trial.

Halle Hansen is accused of striking a teacher at American Senior High School in November after her cellphone was confiscated. The incident resulted in Hansen being handcuffed and later removed from the school.

Her family’s attorney asked the judge to dismiss the charges, arguing that Hansen is unable to understand the legal proceedings and that continuing the case would only put the family through more emotional distress.

However, the judge said Florida law does not allow her to dismiss the charges at this stage. Despite Hansen being found incompetent to proceed, the case must remain open for at least one year before the charges can potentially be dismissed.

Hansen’s attorney questioned why the family should have to wait months for a case involving someone who has already been determined unable to stand trial.

Her mother also says there is more to the story and believes cafeteria surveillance footage could provide important context about what happened that day.

For now, the family is preparing for another hearing expected in October while continuing to advocate for Hansen and hoping the charges will ultimately be dropped.
