Patricia D’Heureux joins workplace experts and legal faculty for The Duty to Accommodate in the Workplace: Legal Requirements and Practical Solutions conference on September 29th.

This one-day conference brings together leading practitioners to examine the legal framework, emerging case law and practical workplace challenges involved in meeting accommodation obligations.

Patricia, along with David Patacairk, Senior Legal Counsel at the City of Ottawa, will facilitate a session on navigating disability accommodation requests, exploring the legal foundations of the duty to accommodate, the employer’s duty to inquire, and trauma-informed approaches to disability accommodation.

On Wednesday, September 23rd, 2026, community members and leaders will travel 1,700km from Grassy Narrows to Toronto to demand that the governments of Ontario and Canada:

1. Compensate everyone in Grassy Narrows fairly for the mercury crisis.
2. End the pollution by stopping the Dryden mill and ending mining and nuclear waste plans that threaten Grassy Narrows.
3. Support Grassy Narrows in restoring their community and way of life from the damage that mercury has done.

🚗Today marks the anniversary of the 1945 Ford autoworkers' strike in Windsor, Ontario, a significant moment in Canadian labour history that led to the establishment of the Rand Formula.

With over 14,000 workers at the time, Ford was Canada’s largest workplace and was looking to break some of the inroads made by unions. After announcing the layoff of 1,500 workers, and the breakdown of negotiations that would have led to mandatory union membership dues automatically deducted from workers’ pay and a paid, two-week annual vacation, Ford autoworkers walked off the job.

To reinforce the picket, 8,000 members of UAW Local 195 across 25 parts plants (including Chrysler and General Motors facilities), went on strike without strike pay in solidarity.

The historic 99-day standoff resulted in increased union security through the creation of the Rand Formula, whereby Supreme Court Justice Ivan Rand ruled in 1946 that all workers in a bargaining unit benefit from union protections and therefore must pay union dues – because everyone benefits from the union's work.
