🎥✨ shared her powerful new single + music video for “TRAPPED” on ! 🖤
Grounded in lived experience, Julie Neff’s “TRAPPED” captures the dissonance of wanting more from life while feeling physically and emotionally held back. Written during lockdown while living in B.C. and navigating the realities of chronic illness, the song was sparked by a story about memory and disorientation, but quickly revealed itself as something far more personal as Neff navigated the realities of living with endometriosis.

Confident and rooted in self-assurance, LOV’s “Can I?” is a Y2K-inspired, mid-tempo R&B track that explores the quiet power of asking for clarity in the early stages of a relationship, not from a partner, but from the instincts of oneself.
A song about testing the waters, “Can I?” reflects on whether the subject of the song feels her partner can love her, knowing she’ll be able to love him. Written and recorded in Montreal with producer Connor Seidel (Charlotte Cardin, Half Moon Run), the song was sparked by late-night walks soundtracked by early 2000s hip hop and R&B influences like Aaliyah, Destiny’s Child, and Alicia Keys. ✍️🎤
Lighthearted and fun with a sprinkle of attitude, “Can I?” opens with a striking, melody-forward vocal and expands to atmospheric, layered harmonies and an infectious, listening-room driven groove. Drawing from Indigenous-inspired phrasing, the track borrows the structure of a traditional song lead to create a hypnotic entry point. As the track unfolds, LOV’s smooth vocals move with ease and control, leaning into nostalgic, early 2000’s melodic textures. 🎶💿
With the rhythm and topline carrying the ease of a natural, head-nodding flow, lyrically, lines like “sweeter than my solitude” and “I like it when you say my name” highlight the duality at the heart of the song: open and self-confident, playful yet grounded in standards. The instrumentation stays deliberately uncluttered, giving space for LOV’s tone and phrasing to lead, echoing the effortless stylistic tones of artists like Amy Winehouse and Adele. With “Can I?”, LOV channels an alter ego rooted in confidence and curiosity, blending nostalgic R&B influences with her own cultural and creative instincts.
