Why is it not “just hair”? Because since the beginning of existence our hair has been part of our expression and creativity. White women tried to silence our creativity by making our hair illegal; forcing us to cover our hair in public. So what did black women do? We decorated our hair coverings! White women were furious - that they could not stop our resilience and creativity. Today we still wear our head scarfs, which is why it’ll never be “just hair”

As a brand who’s motive is to uplift black women, and recognize us as the driving force in the black community and the influencers of culture, I would not be doing justice if I did not acknowledge the travesty that our women and men face in our community. As others indulge in our vibes, music and aesthetic, we are being incarcerated and killed — at the hands of the same people who enjoy and capitalize off of us. We are not your vehicle to pleasure and we are not made for your consumption! Be present not only when we “get lit” but also when the elephant in the room needs to be addressed. Justice for George, Ahmaud, Breonna and countless other black lives that have been taken. And while I stand with our black men, do not forget Breonna and other black women who are forgotten and overshadowed in this fight. Say her name.

“We, their village, do and can and should speak power into them and affirm them until they know empowerment for themselves. The contagion of positivity is critical for Black girls—urgent, even—because baseless criticism and negativity falls on them so freely from so many places. Here are a few statements to inspire random outbursts of appreciation for our young ladies, whether you birthed them, teach them or just collectively love them.” – Janelle Harris, Essence

“Shout out to the black girls whose style, aesthetics and creativity was called "ghetto" before it was seen as innovative. Your expression is an inspiration” - @/Titanbaddie via Twitter
