World Theatres: Shakespeare Globe

The Shakespeare Globe was recently featured as part of the London 2021/2022 New Years Eve celebrations, and was a great showcase of one of the historical theatres of the world.

On 29 June 1613, the original Globe Theatre went up in flames during a performance of Henry VIII. A theatrical cannon, set off during the performance, misfired, igniting the wooden beams and thatching. According to one of the few surviving documents of the event, no one was hurt except a man whose burning breeches were put out with a bottle of ale. It was rebuilt in the following year.

Like all the other theatres in London, the Globe was closed down by the Puritans in 1642. It was pulled down in 1644–45; the commonly cited document dating the act to 15 April 1644 has been identified as a probable forgery—to make room for tenements.

A modern reconstruction of the theatre, named "Shakespeare's Globe", opened in 1997, with a production of Henry V. It is an academic approximation of the original design, based on available evidence of the 1599 and 1614 buildings, and is located approximately 750 feet (230 m) from the site of the original theatre.

World Theatres:

The El Ateneo Grand Spendid opened in 1914 in Buenos Aires Argentina. Designed by architects Peró and Torres Armengo for impresario Max Glücksmann, it operated as a theatre till 1929 when it was transfomred for moving pictures.
In 2000 the building was leased and renovated into the flagship book store for Grupo Ilhsa.
In 2019 National Geographic named it the "worlds most beautiful bookstore"

Lighting helps to set the mood, it is one of the many elements used to tell a story and reach the audience in different ways.

Talking about amazing theaters, here goes our favorite of the week. Known all over the world by its iconic look, the Sydney Opera House was opened in 1979 and has six performance spaces. We had the chance to visit the behind the scenes of this unique place in 2016. We look forward to see the entertainment industry back on its feet.

As important as the show, the set up/tear down of the stage requires long hours of planing, assembling and making sure everything is in place. It can take a lot to make it happen, but the adrenaline and joy we feel while doing it is endless. 🔥

A great lighting design can amplify the show, but it can also be the show all its own.
