ORIGINAL DINARS
Stumbled across this set of gold coins, minted in the mid-7th century (641–668 CE), at the Acropolis Museum in Athens yesterday.
These are Byzantine Solidi, the “global reserve currency” of the era and the exact weight standard for the original Dinars used by the Prophet (s) and the companions.
While these specific coins were minted shortly after the Prophetic era, they are twins to the currency that circulated in Medina.
Notice the portraits (and the crosses); this is exactly what the currency of the early Caliphate looked like for decades.
It wasn’t until Caliph Abd al-Malik led the great coinage reform in 696 CE that this imagery was stripped away to create the iconic, all-script Umayyad Dinar that defined Muslim currency for centuries.
