Daylight savings tips for Toddlers!

Last but not least: 3 plans for toddlers (not including the ‘do nothing’ plan) all rolled up into one post! 🔅If you struggle with early morning wakes, you would need to start today! You will ajust more gradually by starting the day 15 mins later each day. Early morning wakes often take some sleep coaching to quit so DM me if you need more help! 🔅 If your toddler often sleeps in if you let them, I’d let them start the day as late as they want on Saturday (no more than an hour to line up with the time change). You’d then proceed as if you’re already on the new time with nap and bed being an hour later than usual. 🔅If you’re not as lucky but don’t usually struggle with early morning wakes I’d adjust your child’s nap and bed time by 30 mins on Saturday - so nap and bed would be 30 mins later than usual. On Sunday if they don’t seem ready for their usual nap time you may need to adjust it by 30 mins (later) and then bed time as well but by Monday you'd be back on your usual schedule.

Option#2 - Stretch baby's wake times the weekend of: This is a great option for babies on more than one nap who have a hard time if they miss a nap or are sensitive to wake windows. 🔅Saturday morning the weekend of the change, you would stretch each of your baby's wake windows by 15-20 mins. 🔅15 minutes if you’re on 3 naps, 20 minutes if you’re on 2 - we’re looking to adjust by an hour. 🔅This would mean they would be going to bed ‘later’ than usual on Saturday and a little ‘earlier’ than usual on Sunday but by Monday you’ll be back to regularly scheduled programming.💪🏽

Tips for early risers: ~ When I say ensure babe is in darkness I'm talking block out ANY AND ALL light. The tiniest sliver of light can cue a sensitive baby that it might be time to get up ~ Sleep begets sleep so you'll want to make sure babe is getting enough day time sleep in their tank ~ First nap should be based off of what time you want babe to wake up (or as close to as possible). So if you want babe to wake up at 6:30 and their first wake window is 2 hours long, you wouldn't offer a nap until as close to 08:30 as possible, even if they woke up at 5:45 am. And let's be realistic here - Baby's wake between 06:00-07:30 on average so expecting an 08:00 wake up consistently isn't always attainable.

Tips for Newborn Sleep: 1. Starting the day at the same time will eventually lead to predictable nap times 2. A solid bed time (and nap time) routine will cue baby that it's time for sleep 3. Survival mode is real and no matter how you get babe to sleep, sleep is what is most important for both of you in those early weeks. What do you wish someone had told you about those early weeks?
