I’ve taken some time off from Beyond Ideas Consulting for something big - adding a new member to our family! Baby R was born at the beginning of January and has seamlessly integrated into the family.

I’m currently taking advantage of the opportunity to rest (from work - not baby) as rest helps us to heal our body, reduce stress, boost creativity, and improve productivity.

Hello 🙋🏼‍♀️ It’s been a little while since I’ve shared anything so here’s an introduction, or re-introduction for others.

I’m Kaitlyn - PhD in Education Studies, educator, editor, educational consultant, researcher, and writer. I’m here to help you make sense of your masters or doctoral research, teaching practice, or to review academic materials (manuscripts, job materials, etc). For businesses and organizations, I can help you to prepare or edit promotional materials, provide professional development training for your staff, or conduct research and prepare reports.

I currently work as an educational developer with a background in K-12 teaching, teaching at the post-secondary level, and community-based education. I am passionate about equity, inclusion, and reconciliation.

We lead busy lives - and everything just seems to get busier! Where we can leverage technology to make life easier, I'm all for it.

I want to share my three most used apps for keeping my life organized.

💫 Google Calendar: It seems like every school I'm affiliated with uses GSuite - so I have many calendars. I've also created sub-calendars for different purposes, like a family calendar for my children's activities. I also use calendars for time blocking to set aside chunks of time to work on specific projects. I can toggle on and off these calendars on my phone.

💫 Reebee: I can search all the flyers and create my shopping list in one place. Another similar app is Flipp.

💫 Notes: The notes app on my phone helps me to capture ideas, make lists, and even dictate material when I can't type it out.

What apps do you find useful?

Interdisciplinary - involving two or more different subjects or areas of knowledge

Interdisciplinarity allows us to create something new by thinking across and through boundaries. It's a meaningful process for developing solutions to complex problems.

Using my interdisciplinary background, I can support businesses and organizations to understand and solve problems through research, training, and resource development. Having an interdisciplinary background also helps me with editing because I have broad disciplinary knowledge.

There are many types of academic editing which focus on different parts of the writing and publishing process.

I've shared a little about myself as an educator and my academic background, but how does that translate to Beyond Ideas Consulting?

💫 teacher and educator: I am trained to facilitate growth and development in others. If I'm editing your thesis, or developing training for your staff, my goal is always to improve outcomes.

💫 alt ac in the academy: I continue to work in the university in my day job as an educational developer, with additional roles teaching and sitting on graduate student supervisory commitees as an adjunct professor. I understand, from multiple positionalities, what is expected of graduate students and early career academics.

💫 interdisciplinarity: I completed interdisciplinary undergraduate and graduate programs; I'm trained to view topics from multiple perspectives. This is particularly useful for editing and proofreading - but comes in handy for any problem solving.

In any given day, I am problem solving; writing; developing educational resources; facilitating learning; editing and proofreading my own or other's work; reviewing, planning, or writing up research; or, consulting with educators to improve their practice. I'm sure there are lots of other things I do too ...
