As the weather gets colder, rodents begin looking for warm places to build a nest. One of the places they love to find refuge is in your vehicle. Occasionally they make homes in the interior or trunk of vehicles that are not being driven regularly. The smell can get really bad. More often they build nests in your engine or blower motor or HVAC box that you won't find until something goes wrong, and they love to gnaw on wires that can damage electrical systems within your vehicle. We regularly see wiring damage due to rodents and the problems related to this can be very expensive to diagnose and fix. Here are some practical tips that can help prevent this from happening to you:

1. Remove any food or garbage from your vehicle. Vacuum the interior regularly to eliminate crumbs and debris.

2. Avoid leaving items around your vehicle like blankets or clothes that could provide nesting materials.

3. Choose parking locations away from bushes, trees, or tall grass where rodents may nest.

4. Consider using natural repellents like peppermint oil or commercial rodent deterrent pouches or sprays in and around the vehicle. Always check that these products are safe for automotive use and avoid spraying on electrical components. The jury seems to be out on whether ultrasonic rodent repellent devices actually work.

5. Periodically check under the hood and inside the vehicle for signs of nesting or droppings.
