Earlier this fall I ( George Tsougrianis) spent a day in Grasslands National Park walking with a small group into “snake country,” watching people confront their fears in real time. What struck me most wasn’t the rattlesnakes themselves — though they’re incredible — but how the land seemed to soften everyone as the walk went on. Nervous glances slowly turned into curiosity, and eventually, a kind of quiet respect.

We found shed skins tucked between the rocks, a frog hiding near a small pool of water, and a racer snake sliding through the grass. Then we found ourselves just a metre away from a baby rattlesnake resting in the shade, a tiny creature suddenly curious about the humans watching it. In that moment, something shifted. Fear gave way to understanding.
I put together a new Backroad Story about the experience, not just about snakes, but about what happens when we look a little closer and let the prairie teach us something.
