π² Prune for Healthy Trees π²
Keep your trees thriving by knowing what to trim and when!
π 1. Competing Leaders
Remove weaker stems that challenge the main trunk.
Keeps the tree strong and focused in growth.
πΏ 2. Malformed Branches
Mis-shapen or oddly angled branches can stress the tree.
Prune to encourage better form and structure.
πΏ 3. Branches from the Same Spot
Too many branches from one location = weakness.
Remove the extras to avoid overcrowding and breakage.
πΏ 4. Narrow Attachments
Branches with tight angles are prone to snapping.
Cut these out early to avoid damage during storms.
π 5. Weak Growth in the Canopy (Water Sprouts)
These grow rapidly but are non-productive.
Remove them to direct energy to fruit-bearing growth.
π± 6. Suckers from the Base
Weak shoots at the base drain energy.
Trim them off regularly to keep your tree healthy.
πΏ 7. Crossing Branches
Rubbing branches cause wounds and disease.
Keep the stronger, better-positioned one.
π 8. Broken or Diseased Branches
Always prune damaged parts ASAP.
Stops spread of disease and reduces risk of breakage.
π³ 9. Inward-Growing Branches
Branches growing toward the trunk reduce airflow.Remove to keep the canopy open and healthy.
π² 10. Crowded Branches
Too many branches = poor air circulation and light.
Thin them out for a balanced, well-lit structure.
Pro Tip:
Use sharp, clean tools and prune during the dormant season for most trees (late winter or early spring)

Good information if you experienced hail damage to your garden and trees.
We just heard that gardeners in Swift Current suffered hail damage.
Here is how to deal with the aftermath:
If your garden was hit with hail, take a deep breath and donβt despair. You donβt have to pull out all of your plants β most can be salvaged. Remove any debris that is not attached to your plants. Keep as much foliage on the plant as you can (even if there are minor tears or damage) for photosynthesis. Plants respond to stress by making new foliage. Keep plants well-watered and mulched to reduce stress.
Vegetables and annuals: If leaves and stems are intact, keep them. Give the plants time to grow before removing them completely. Keep watered and lightly fertilize. You have the advantage of well-developed root systems which may bounce back. If you have big gaps in your garden, buy a few annuals to fill the holes or seeds some short season veggies like radishes or leafy greens.
Perennials: Clean up debris and deadhead spent flowers. Cut back plants carefully β some will grow back and regenerate, but some wonβt. Do not fertilize.
Trees: Safety first β remove debris and assess potential dangers like broken limbs and branches. Do not remove branches that have lost their leaves as new growth may emerge. Make clean cuts on broken limbs. Do not apply wound paint or fertilize. Call an ISA certified arborist for big jobs.
Do something good for the earth. Plant a tree!
