Swipe for July >> August

This is what monarchs see when they arrive and when they leave.

We are saying goodbye to the monarchs this week for their migration south. I hope we will see them next year.

Have your native plants ready for the pit stops on their journey 🙏

In winter, a garden with structure continues to shine, unclouded by the overwhelming vibrancy of the growing season.

And since the weeds have called a truce, you have time to overthink what you will do with your green space next season.

I have compiled the native plants used by designer Piet Oudolf into a visual blog. According to his design principles, 70% of the plants in a garden must have a robust structure for year-round wonder. I hope you like it! https://georginanaturopathic.ca/native-plant-garden-but-designer/

"Prairie reconstructions cannot be left to their own devices in our modern, highly human influenced world.🌻

Investment in ongoing habitat maintenance is a necessity, or these prairie reconstructions can quickly turn into fields of exotic invasive weeds or full of aggressive trees and shrubby growth. 🌿⛏️

Prairies are one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, removed from existence by our agricultural development for crop production."🌾🌾🌾

From "A Prairie Resurgence?" by Leighton Reid and James Faupel

Want to be a monarch home base?

In our summer newsletter, we will share the adult monarch's favourite snack - the plant they choose above all at garden centres (hint: it's not milkweed - that's for the caterpillars)

We also discuss the differences between milkweed species and which ones monarchs prefer and why.

Step outside at night in June to look for fireflies✨

Magical woodland garden how-to:
▫️Create drifts of colour through repetition🌷🌷
▫️Have white flowers to reflect moonlight
▫️No lights, at least in June, so that fireflies can find each other✨

Damage control tip:
Pick your non-native weeds for wildflower bouquets 💐

Time to plant! ... It's Victoria Day weekend - the average safe date beyond the last frost of the season 🌨️

For those of you who like precision, there's the Old Farmer's Almanac, which let's you search frost dates by postal code.

And more good news! ... Zehrs and other select Loblaws Company garden centres now sell native plants!

Go get yourself some wild gems 💎💚

Since humans occupy so much land now, our yards are the future conservation areas.

We can grow plant species of special concern and feed endangered butterflies.

Our yards and balconies add up to so much land that this is definitely an area where individuals can make a difference
..by planting.

Plant things that originally grew here.

If you have ever played Red Dead Redemption 2, you know how beautiful the North American landscape was pre-colonization, and we can work on restoring it.

Our homes will still be here, but surrounded by meadows and forests.

In this picture, Matthew is holding a woodland phlox, which is a shade-loving native plant.

The elegance of native plants is unrivaled.

If you have ever visited a thriving, healthy forest, you know what I mean.

You can recreate the same drama in your own yard or on your balcony.

You now have the right palette 🖌
