Road to Glory: The 2026 FIH Hockey World Cup Begins Without Canada as the World’s Elite Prepare for Battle
By Goldie Dhillon
For just over two weeks this August, the world’s greatest field hockey nations will gather in Belgium and the Netherlands for the 16th FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup, a tournament where Olympic champions, continental powerhouses and rising nations will battle for the sport’s biggest prize outside the Olympic Games.
From 14-30 August 2026, sixteen countries will compete across two iconic venues—Wavre, Belgium, and Amstelveen, Netherlands—marking the first time in history that the Men’s Hockey World Cup will be jointly hosted by two nations.
But while the world’s best prepare for another chapter of hockey history, one familiar nation will be missing.
Canada.
A Painful Absence for Canadian Hockey
Canada’s absence from the 2026 Hockey World Cup wasn’t because the team chose not to participate.
The Canadian men simply failed to qualify.
The road to Belgium and the Netherlands ran through the FIH World Cup Qualifiers in Santiago, Chile. Canada was drawn into a difficult group alongside Ireland, Poland and Korea, where every match carried enormous significance.
Canada’s campaign began with consecutive defeats:
Lost 5-2 to Ireland
Lost 2-1 to Poland
Those two narrow losses proved decisive.
Although Canada rebounded impressively by defeating Korea 7-2 and hosts Chile 3-2, the early setbacks prevented them from reaching the semifinals—the stage that effectively determined World Cup qualification.
Canada eventually lost 5-1 to Scotland in the fifth-place playoff, finishing 6th in the Santiago qualifier and missing the World Cup entirely. (Field Hockey Canada)
For a nation once regarded among the strongest teams outside Europe, it was another disappointing chapter.
Canada’s Long Road Back
Canada’s men’s national team has qualified for only six Hockey World Cups.
Their best-ever finish remains 8th place in 1998.
Recent World Cup appearances have become increasingly rare.

Led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, India arrives with one of its strongest squads in years and genuine hopes of ending a 51-year wait for another world title.

A Tournament Bigger Than a Trophy
The Hockey World Cup has evolved into far more than an international championship.
It represents the highest standard of modern field hockey, showcasing tactical innovation, world-class broadcasting, sold-out stadiums and millions of viewers around the globe. For emerging hockey nations, it is also a benchmark for what the sport can become.
For Canada, missing consecutive World Cups raises important questions about the future direction of the men’s high-performance program. While the team remains competitive against many nations, qualification now demands consistency against opponents who have significantly increased investment in coaching, sports science and professional player development.
As Belgium and the Netherlands welcome the world’s finest teams, Canadian fans can only watch from afar and wonder when the maple leaf will once again return to hockey’s biggest stage.
