As of Aug. 1, businesses must give advance notice before auto-renewing subscriptions like streaming and food delivery, and you can cancel a renewal any time without penalty. High-pressure door-to-door sales of furnaces and air conditioners are now banned, along with credit offers arranged at your doorstep.

The province says the rules are built to protect seniors, newcomers and people on lower incomes, the groups most often targeted.

More fraud protections, including free monthly credit scores and free credit freezes, arrive in 2027.

🎓 History made in Surrey today SFU Surrey

The first 48 students began classes at Simon Fraser University's Stephens Family School of Medicine — the first new medical school in Western Canada in nearly 60 years.

The inaugural cohort started orientation on SFU's Surrey campus, training to become B.C.'s future family doctors. The three-year, year-round program lets them graduate a year sooner, with residencies starting as early as 2029. Each class will grow to 120 students a year by 2035.

On site to mark the opening: Jennifer Whiteside, Minister of Labour; Jagrup Brar, MLA for Surrey-Fleetwood; Garry Begg, Parliamentary Secretary for Surrey Infrastructure; and Dr. David J. Price, founding dean of the school.

Garry Begg: "Surrey is proud to welcome B.C.'s newest medical school and the next generation of doctors."

Founding Dean Dr. David J. Price: "Welcoming our first students is a moment of tremendous pride and excitement. This inaugural cohort will help shape a new approach to medical education focused on community-based care and equitable access."

In a statement, Premier David Eby said the school is about training "more doctors here at home… care for families through some of life's happiest and hardest moments."

The school embeds Indigenous knowledge in its curriculum and focuses on community-based care across the Fraser Health region. It's named for the Stephens family — founders of Nature's Path — following a historic $40 million gift.
