When I talk to guardians of aggressive, fearful, hyperactive and reactive dogs about exercise, we’re not just talking about physical exertion, sniffing, and autonomy. We’re talking about sensory experiences.
Every natural environment offers a unique sensory experience that is impossible to replicate elsewhere. From smells to textures to visuals, each place we bring our dogs offers something different. This is something I break down in more detail in my exercise webinar, so link in the bio if you haven’t watched it yet.
Now, notice how Biscuit responds to these different aspects of natural space. Notice how he changes paces, picks up his feet, closes his eyes, and raises and lowers his head, switches directions, and follows scents. He is responding both to the cues of the environment (like tall grass, pooling scents, and wet dirt) but also from his handler. Not only is this dog getting exercise, he is having a multisensory experience that is challenging and fulfilling.
And THAT makes for a happy dog.

But really, what even is hyperactivity?!

People ask me all the time, what is hyperactivity? What does it look like? How is it defined? and I’ve said a lot of different things over the years. But, now I feel like I’ve finally come to the point of a definition.

As someone who specializes in hyperactivity and other complex behavior problems, I define hyperactive as:
Dogs who are unable to access two or more of the basic tenants of life for a social species* without frenetic or frantic behaviour.
*food, water, movement both on and off leash, access to social connection with humans or dogs
The dog who can’t get to the door to go outside without sprinting there and slamming into something on their way. The dog who explodes. The dog who just can’t stop moving in order to access reinforcement. The dog who has to constantly be playing or chewing or biting at something. The dog who starts running and just doesn’t stop until they’re caught, hurt, or completely exhausted.
