St. Matthew's Parish

St. Matthew’s Parish in Surrey recently hosted a Living Peace Rosary, a unique prayer gathering featuring hand-crocheted roses, multilingual prayers, and a strong sense of togetherness.

Inspired by a tradition started by Archbishop Fulton Sheen in the 1950s, the Living Peace Rosary uses colour-coded roses to represent different regions of the world, symbolizing global unity and shared prayer. During the service, participants held roses and prayed together, each prayer led in a different language, reflecting the diversity of the community. French, Tagalog, Polish, Dutch, and many other languages filled the church.

The roses themselves were lovingly handmade by local volunteers over several weeks, turning the event into a blend of faith, craftsmanship, and community effort. Organizers hope the gathering inspires similar events at other parishes across the Lower Mainland.

Moments like this highlight how Surrey’s communities come together, through tradition, creativity, and shared reflection.

With great joy, as we celebrate the Birthday of Jesus, Our Lord, on behalf of St. Matthew’s Parish, together with Father Rich, Father Marian, and Deacon Steve, I would like to wish everyone and your family a happy, peaceful and Blessed Christmas Season! As we welcome the Infant Jesus into our hearts at Christmas, let us keep Our Lord with us always and allow Him to guide us throughout the New Year!

Based on the most recent diocesan census, St. Matthew’s has become the biggest parish in the Archdiocese of Vancouver with the most attendance for Sunday Masses! It’s a great news, showing that our parish is growing, active, and fully alive!

We would like to thank you all for your love, prayers, and generous support to our parish throughout this past year. In particular, we, at the rectory, are very grateful for all the Christmas cards, food, gifts that many have sent us over this holiday.

May the Infant Jesus bless everyone with the fullness of life, peace, joy, happiness, and good health during this Christmas Season and throughout the New Year 2026.

Pope Leo XIV has invited the faithful to join him in a day of prayer and fasting for peace on Friday, August 22, the Feast of the Queenship of Mary.

As wars continue to cause suffering in Ukraine, the Holy Land, and other parts of the world, let us unite in prayer, asking the Lord for peace and justice, and entrusting our world to Mary, Queen of Peace.
