New Bayside Rugby Player/Coach “Jesse Mackail”

Only 25 years old from Palmerston North New Zealand, Jesse MacKail has been living in Canada since the beginning of 2019. Jesse has already made his mark on the pitch for The Sharks winning a Division 1 championship in his inaugural season in 2019.

Like most Kiwis, Jesse started playing rugby before he could even walk or talk. As the youngest of 2 rugby mad siblings, Jesse’s Mom signed him up at the age of 3 to help keep her sanity, as Jesse couldn’t stand still on the sidelines whilst watching his “Bro” play on the field.

A local tv reporter asked Jesse for a rugby segment he was doing that day what his favourite part of rugby was. Jesse replied “tackling everybody” (however it was only touch rugby at that age). Enough said! Hence, Jesse will be focussing on coaching The Shark’s defense and breakdown skills, whilst still leading by example out on the field as a player.

Having represented New Zealand schools and u20s, Jesse graduated to become part of the Manawatu Turbos and Turbos 7s squad and attended the 2017 New Zealand 7s training camp - no mean feat!

In 2018 Jesse was included in the Western Force training squad before he decided to take his rugby up a notch or two and join The Bayside Sharks in 2019.

Although only 25 and still a few years away from the peak of his playing powers, Jesse has always shown a keen interest in coaching. Not only has Jesse ran 7s clinics in New Zealand and Fiji, he has also coached age grade teams in the New Zealand ITM Cup, culminating in his role as forwards and defensive coach for his u21 club team.

Looking for a new challenge Jesse came to Canada in 2019 for a laid back working holiday. As is often the case, girlfriend Ashley fell in love with the Kiwi accent and the all round rugby player’s charm and Jesse and Ashley have settled down with their 2 children (dogs) Rosie and Richie. Jesse maintains he now calls Canada and Bayside his home and The Sharks are more than happy to adopt yet another stray into our pack.

As this is Jesse’s first senior mens position, he is looking forward to implementing his knowledge of the game to help grow the team into a highly competitive Division 1 outfit with the goal of becoming a Premier team in the near future.

Equally as important Jesse aims to have a strong year in his role as a player to help the boys to a “Repeat” as The Sharks are the reigning Division 1 Champions.

Jesse’s goal as a coach mirrors his Co-Coach Rudi Brits; to not only develop skills on field, but to also create a “brotherhood” and togetherness off the field. Put simply, rugby is a game where you get beaten up for 80 minutes, but that beating is fun when it’s with family!

As Rudi & Jesse are also working together off field, creating that “togetherness” they both espouse, we can expect exciting times both on and off the field in the years ahead for The Bayside Sharks.

Up the Shark!

New Bayside Rugby Coach “Rudi Brits”

Welcome to “The Shark Tank” recently retired professional rugby player Rudi Brits and his young family from South Africa

A proponent of the “dark” arts, the South African tight head prop from Pretoria has turned to the “light” shedding well over 70 lbs from his playing days.

Rudi has become in his post playing days, a health and fitness enthusiast, a coach, mentor and a sports psychologist. Utilizing the many years spent in a professional sports environment, Rudi has built a strength + conditioning business which he aims to take to the next level in White Rock, BC.

The great news is that the Brits family are here on a permanent move to Canada, where they plan to lay down roots in our fantastic Bayside community. Husband to his high school sweetheart Deirdre, and father to new mini shark Kai (10) and future prime minister ili-may (6), the Brits family will be undoubtedly a fantastic addition to both our rugby club and community.

Rudi has represented South Africa in wrestling as well as at rugby, becoming a professional rugby player straight out of high school.

After his formative professional years, honing his trade in The Currie Cup as a front-row forward with the Blue Bulls, Eastern Province Kings and Pumas, rugby took the Brits family on a 12 year long journey across Europe before touching down this July in White Rock, Canada.

From God’s own Country “Yorkshire” (their favourite place on Earth) to Coventry, Cornwall (Cornish Pirates) and the south of France (Colomiers & Libourne), Rudi has developed a network of life-long friends, rugby contacts and extensive knowledge of many rugby clubs and cultures, which he aims to share with us here at Bayside.

At age 36, Rudi and his family returned to their native South Africa in 2016, where Rudi started his own coaching & training business consulting and coaching schools and clubs, hosting scrum clinics, 1 on 1 & group S&C, boot camps and sports specific training.

Rudi maintains his focus as a coach, whether it be individual or as a team, is to not only develop better individuals in the chosen discipline, but to make them a better human being all round, which in turn will excel them in which ever route they take. Honesty & integrity above all else, discipline, respect in self and others.

Please extend a warm welcome to our latest “Shark” and his young family. Expect to see their constant presence at the fields and in our new clubhouse. Kai is already signed up for the Bayside minis (one to watch for the future!) and Rudi will be joining the Bayside coaching staff as well as offering his strength and conditioning services to the Bayside membership.

Up the Shark!

Happy Gratiwednesday!

Last week we recognized our concrete suppliers, but the concrete work doesn't stop there. Time to give props to one of ours props!
This job had a ton of cuts, cores and penetrations required to get the services where they needed to go. Enter Jamie Lee Marshall and his team at JL Projects.
They quickly jumped in whenever called upon and provided outstanding service and quality work on the project at an extremely reduced rate. What else would you expect from a longtime player and club contributor!
