Alumni Spotlight: The Adair Brothers of Strathroy

Alumni Spotlight: Robert, Charles, Kenneth and Fred Adair, four brothers from Strathroy whose service and sacrifice during the Second World War left a lasting mark on the community.

The sons of Frank and Dorothy Stockdale Adair, the brothers grew up in Strathroy and attended Strathroy Collegiate Institute. Known around town for sports and time spent at their grandmother’s home on North Street, each answered the call to serve during the war.

Corporal Robert "Bob" Adair served with the Perth Regiment and was killed in the Liri Valley in Italy on May 26, 1944. Sergeant Charles Adair served with the Royal Canadian Air Force and was lost during a bombing mission near Boulogne, France, on September 9, 1944. Private Kenneth Adair, also with the Perth Regiment, was killed in Italy on December 20, 1944.

Only one brother, Fred Adair, returned home after the war.

Today, SDCI is located on Adair Drive in Strathroy, a street named in honour of the Adair brothers and their family’s sacrifice.

The Adair brothers are remembered as young men from Strathroy whose courage and service reflected the strength of an entire generation.
