Alberta is strengthening its wildfire response through expanded municipal partnerships and substantial investment in De Havilland Canada waterbombers built right here in our constituency!

Thank you to the Strathmore Fire Department, a dedicated Wildland Urban Interface team, for the vital work they do to protect our communities. With trained crews, integrated air support, and stronger municipal coordination, Alberta is ready for the 2026 wildfire season.

We all have a role to play in emergency preparedness.

Emergency services are the first call for help, but depending on the size and severity of the situation, there could be delays reaching your community. Households are encouraged to build self-reliance by preparing to meet their needs for a minimum of 72 hours. Always remember that we are “In It Together.” Building strong social ties, practicing preparedness habits and sharing them with your community helps build community resilience to achieve better outcomes during and after an emergency. As Emergency Preparedness Week comes to a close, remember that you can take small steps and add them to your routine to build resilience over time.

Fun fact for you: The Preparedness Survey of Albertans shows just 20% of those surveyed have a household emergency plan. Even fewer of those surveyed have an emergency plan at their partner’s place of work, at their child’s school/daycare or an elderly parent’s care home.

Getting kids involved in emergency preparedness isn’t about scaring them. It’s about giving them confidence and a sense of control. When kids understand what to do, they’re far more likely to stay calm and respond safely.

When dangerous situations arise, it’s important to act quickly. So, are you ready? Officials recommend being prepared to be self sufficient for at least 72 hours during a disaster. That starts with having an emergency kit ready to go for you and your family.

And that includes making a plan for your pets! Putting together a pet emergency kit ahead of time can take the stress out of making tough decisions in the moment.

Heads up, there will be an emergency alert test tomorrow afternoon!

When people think of emergencies of in Alberta, they often picture wildfires. While it's true Alberta has it's fair share of wildfires, the reality is much broader. Like the infographic shows, Alberta faces a wide range of natural, technological, and human-caused risks, many of which have already happened right here in Strathmore.

Let's do a bit of a jump back into time. July 10, 1924 started off as a pleasant day. The skies were clear, the birds were singing, and being the fourth day of the Calgary Stampede, spirits were high. It was also the day a massive fire wiped out half of Strathmore's entire business section.

In the late afternoon, a fire broke out in the Opera House on Main Street after an old oil stove exploded, throwing burning kerosene across the floor of the wooden building. Within minutes, the Opera House was a mass of flames. Aided by high winds, the flames tore through the building and jumped across the street, wiping out businesses on both sides. Calgary firefighters and local helpers pumped water from the nearby CPR lake until 2 a.m. before the fire was finally out. While nobody was injured (a miracle in it's own right), total losses were estimated around $100,000. For today, that would be around $1,859,000.

Emergencies can happen in Alberta anywhere, anytime. Strathmore is no exception. Are you prepared?
