The Eidt family has a long and significant history in Stratford. This week, Stratford-Perth Archives is highlighting Dr. Edward Henry Eidt and his involvement in the city’s development.

Dr. Edward Henry Eidt was born in 1864 in Wilmot Township, Waterloo County. After completing high school, Eidt studied dentistry in Toronto and graduated in 1889. That same year, Dr. Eidt moved to Stratford to establish a dental practice with Dr. A. H. Hippie. As seen in this photograph from the collections at Stratford-Perth Archives, Dr. Eidt later had his own practice at 70 Wellington Street located above George Schwoob’s barbershop downtown.

In 1897, Dr. Eidt was elected as a member of Stratford City Council, representing the Falstaff Ward. He was re-elected to council each year following until 1907. Dr. Eidt was also a member of the Public School Board. He was especially passionate about the City’s parks and the preservation of natural areas. For a span of almost 35 years, he was instrumental in the development of an 850-acre parks system for City of Stratford - The Municipality.

Outside of his City parks involvement, he had a passion for horticulture, planting dozens of plum trees, keeping beehives and chickens. Dr. Eidt passed away in August, 1937 at the age of 73.

⚠️🛑 A temporary all-way stop had been installed at the intersection of Perth Road 163 and Perth Line 20 in Fullarton.

The temporary traffic control measure is required to accommodate increased traffic volumes in the area resulting from ongoing construction of the new roundabout at Highway 23 and Perth Line 20 in Russeldale. The roundabout project is being led by the Ministry of Transportation (MTO).

Drivers are reminded to obey all posted signage and detour routes, reduce speed, and use extra caution while travelling through the area during the construction period. The MTO anticipates completion of the Russeldale roundabout project in Fall 2026.

⏱️ Accessibility Tip #5: Give people extra time.
Whether it’s during conversations, appointments, presentations, or transactions, allowing extra time can reduce pressure and improve accessibility for people with cognitive, communication, learning, or mobility disabilities.

In April, 1936 the newly formed Perth County Horse Breeders’ Association presented the first Horse Show in Stratford in twenty years. The event attracted over 1,500 attendees from around the county and beyond. Attendees represented townships throughout the county including Mornington, Logan, Ellice, North and South Easthope, Downie, and Blanshard as well as Mitchell, St. Marys, and Stratford.

The Horse Show was scheduled for April 8 at the Stratford Agricultural Grounds. Even though a bitter winter storm swept through the city just days before, a rush of last-minute entries to the show helped make the event a success despite the weather.

In the years following, the annual spring Horse Show was typically held in May or June. Pictured is the cover of the 1941 Perth County Horse Show program which took place June 3 to 5 in Stratford. The 1941 Show program included additional classes, a Military Parade, and a Machinery Exhibition of automobiles and farm equipment. An article in the Beacon Herald declared that attendance to the 1941 Horse Show was the highest on record.
