DID YOU KNOW?
Children should be referred for a comprehensive eye exam whenever visual symptoms are noticed or if they are not achieving their potential. Many of these vision problems will not be detected during a school vision screening or limited vision assessment as part of a school physical or routine pediatric health evaluation.

BRAIN INJURY AWARENESS
Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)/concussion is an all-encompassing/umbrella term for damage to the brain that occurs after birth. Typically this damage is sudden, non-progressive, non-degenerative, and leads to abnormalities in neurological processing. These neurological changes can adversely affect the way a person functions in their activities of daily living, i.e., thought process, emotional behavior, speech ability, and physical changes such as impaired motor function, problems with a person’s visual system.

From one of our patients..
So this is a long post for me but about a month ago I had terrible pain in my eye which turned into double vision which was diagnosed as ocular nerve palsy. I was told at the Misericordia Eye Center, after seeing more than six eye specialists that I should just patch my affected eye and maybe it would go away in three months. Just didn’t seem right to me and I contacted my good friend and colleague eye doctor Dr Dawn Dunford She told me to get rid of the patch start doing specific exercises and go see an osteopath. I totally respect her and did as she asked. I went back to see her on Friday and my eyes are 100% better. I have to be careful to not get overtired but so far so good. No more pirate jokes for me !Three cheers for alternative medicine! I will certainly never take good eyesight for granted again💕

Give our office a call at 204.467.8044 to discuss Vision Therapy and see if VT would be beneficial to you or your child.
DID YOU KNOW?
Vision therapy is safe, drug-free, and effective for both children and adults! While visual acuity (the "20/20" part of vision) requires glasses to improve, visual skills such as tracking together along a line of text must be learned during development, these skills can also be improved later in life at any age.
It is estimated that 1 in 10 children have a vision problem severe enough to affect their learning in school, but school vision screenings can miss up to half of these problems. A comprehensive vision exam with a developmental optometrist checks all aspects of eye health, vision, and visual skills, and can ensure you or your child is not struggling unnecessarily with an undiagnosed vision problem.

Did you know:
As part of routine school health assessments, children’s eyesight is commonly tested in school vision screenings. However, passing a school vision screening does not guarantee the absence of a vision problem. These screenings are typically limited in scope to reading
letters on a distance eye chart and are not intended to replace a comprehensive vision evaluation that can detect vision based learning problems. In fact, many times these important vision disorders routinely evade detection.
It is estimated that 35-40% of all children with learning disabilities have visual problems. Specifically, at least 20% of individuals with learning disabilities have been found to have prominent visual information processing problems, and 15-20% of them have problems with visual efficiency skills.
Without efficient visual skills the act of reading can be very frustrating. To the child with a vision based learning problem – often called a “hidden disability” – these frustrations can
spill over into behaviors that can present themselves in a fashion similar to attention deficit disorders such as ADD/ADHD, or reading problems such as dyslexia.
If your child is having issues at school, give us a call and speak with our vision therapist to see if your child would benefit from vision therapy. If you are undecided or want more information, you can also visit the COVD website at www.covd.org

January 30th is National CTE Awareness Day!
CTE (Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy) is a progressive disease of the brain which occurs in individuals with a history of repeated brain trauma, like concussion. We tend to see CTE in athletes who have played sports where head injury can occur, such as football or hockey – or winter sports like skiing and skating. And as media focus will be on the upcoming Super Bowl (February 13) and the Winter Olympics (February 4 – 20), we think it’s important to help spread awareness about the disease, its symptoms, and warning signs.
