On National Truth and Reconciliation Day we wear an orange shirt in support of conversations, stories and raising awareness of our past, present and future work still to be done. A small gesture of acknowledgment to recognize the atrocities and multi-generational effects (epigenetics) of the Canadian Indian residential school system.
We wear the orange shirt in respect to Phyllis Webstad and her experience as a residential school Survivor whose new orange shirt was taken away on her first day at residential school in 1973, a story that led to Orange Shirt Day and the message “Every Child Matters”. She founded the Orange Shirt Society to share her experience and raise awareness about the lasting harm of the residential school system, touring the country to promote truth and reconciliation.
What is epigenetics?
Epigenetics explains how passed-down trauma may alter gene expression without changing the underlying DNA sequence, potentially influencing a child’s stress response, anxiety, and other health risks. While environmental factors like early care are influential, evidence suggests epigenetic changes in germ cells (eggs and s***m) could be a mechanism by which a parent’s traumatic experiences are transmitted to their offspring, creating a biological memory of the trauma.
Research support epigenetics in the following examples;
- Holocaust Survivors: Research on the descendants of Holocaust survivors has shown epigenetic differences linked to their parents’ experiences, even though the children did not directly experience the events.
- Residential Schools: Studies have found a relationship between intergenerational trauma and epigenetics in families of residential school survivors in Canada.
- Veterans: Studies have also identified epigenetic differences in the DNA of s***m from Vietnam War veterans suffering from PTSD, which were linked to mental health conditions in their children.

Stettler hosted the U13 Girls Hockey Provincial Championships this weekend.
The place was hoping all weekend, and the Sports Massage Therapy booth was busy too! Assisting athletes and their families with their health and wellness needs. Always love working with and educating the young athletes.
The home team played amazing! What a joy to watch! They may not have made the final but showed up and cheered on the teams in the championship game. Such sportsmanship, respect and hospitality. So important! You never know how far you may go and who you may end up playing with down the road.
Thank you for helping organize us to be a part of it! Great job athletes, coaches, parents, volunteers, and everyone involved.
Welcome to reducing low back pain and loosening up the hips. Follow this sequence if you like. Start with one side & repeat on the other.
Take your time, breathe, relax, & enjoy.
One of our rules in yoga is not to push too hard through the stretch. Take long slow deep breathes and let go. Honour your body where it’s at today. Ease into it, and remember if it feels good do it, if it doesn’t, don’t.

Dry Saunas: What Is It and How Does It Work?
Dry saunas, also known as Finnish saunas, are a type of sauna that uses dry heat to raise the temperature of the room. The heat is generated by a stove that burns wood, gas, or electricity, and the temperature can range from 70°C to 100°C. The low humidity in the room makes it easier for the body to sweat, which helps to detoxify the skin and relax the muscles.
The dry sauna experience typically starts with a shower to clean the body and remove any lotions or oils that may interfere with sweating. Once inside the sauna, the user can sit on a bench and enjoy the heat for 10-20 minutes. It is recommended to start with a lower temperature and gradually increase it as the body adjusts to the heat.
While in the sauna, the user can also use a towel to wipe off sweat and increase circulation. After leaving the sauna, it is important to take another shower to cool down the body and prevent dehydration. It is also recommended to rest for a few minutes before returning to regular activities.
Dry saunas have several health benefits, including improved circulation, relaxation of muscles, and detoxification of the skin. They are also believed to boost the immune system and relieve stress. However, it is important to note that people with certain medical conditions, such as high blood pressure or heart disease, should consult a doctor before using a dry sauna.
