Our goal is to accelerate the growth of innovative silviculture by improving knowledge of these systems in British Columbia through a research and extension program.

On April 13th, one of SIPs 2024 Grantees, the Wetzin’kwa Community Forest, had a pleasant surprise as a special guest dropped by for a night-time visit at an old growth subalpine fir tree. This project focuses on drawing on cumulative knowledge from the 1950s to now, and monitoring partial harvests in the sub-boreal and transitional ecosystems of Northwest BC. This information can be used as a way to connect retired and current practitioners and scientists, and to offer mentorship, project reports and updated interpretive signage across the Bulkley Valley Nordic and Demo Forest trail network.

🌰 This Northern Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys sabrinus) is only the second captured on video by this project group. They are happy to report that it appears to be very healthy with a thick, muscular tail. These squirrels are hard to capture on camera as they are nocturnal, and are not often abundant in mature sub-boreal forests such as this Community Forest.

Our Annual Report 2025/26 is available on our website!

Read this past year’s issue to keep up with recent SIP milestones, events, and overall growth. Some things to look forward to include:

⭐ 21 new grantees joined the Fall 2025 SIP Grants Program, providing an additional investment of over $800,000! By combining both 2024 and 2025 grantee intakes, SIP has supported over 50 innovative silviculture projects across BC with over $1.8 million in grant funding.
⭐ SIP Exchange (SIPEx) was launched to expand extension efforts across BC by connecting users to a knowledge hub of experts, improving accessibility to resources, training and expertise, and continuing development of extension information (e.g. DataHub, and Out On A Limb). We aim to continue building up capacity with SIPEx to address major extension gaps and create lasting engagement between SIP and forest practitioners.

A special thank you to everyone who made these achievements with SIP possible, we look forward to many more milestones next year.
