Hummingbird Farm
Floral design studio. Specialty cut flower farm. Wedding venue.
Alex and I did a really big planting push today! We were behind due to either too cold nights or to hot days…. Hopefully we will get another 3k in by the end of the week!
We cut the first 60 peonies on mothers day and have been cutting hard in the peony house since then. I expect we will have 1,000 cuts or more total from the house, holding 200 plants.
The rest of the peonies in the field, more then 700 plants are coming along nicely and will likely start to bloom in the next few weeks. We hope to not have much of a gap in supply :-) The field peonies will be filling bouquets typically until the end of June or early July!
Will we? Yes I believe we will start cutting peonies in the coming days!
In the fall of 2024 Brad built the caterpillar tunnel over 200 of our earliest season peonies.
These peonies where planted in the fall of 2021 and it takes 3-4 years for a new planting to reach full production.
As I bet you can imagine this was a big investment in the future with a pretty price tag that came along with it :-)
Last spring was the first early harvest from this house, and we missed mother’s day by one week…. 😭😩😭
We made some changes to our process to try and push a bit harder!
So are we going to make Mothers Day weekend this year? YES I do believe we will! With a few cuts anyway…. Plan to join us for our flower festival mothers day weekend, sat and Sunday 10-3 pm and see for yourself!
Its time!!!!! If you are getting hitched this summer and want the most unique, gorgeous local blooms for your big day, we got you!
From simple back yard elopements to the big event with loads of guest and big dreams we can do it all!
I have a decade of experience helping your dreams become reality :-) let’s get started, dates booking up so its time to snag yours!
Sunflowers are in our top 5 focus flowers for good reason…. You love them! Every year we start getting questions about when the sunflowers will be here! The answer fyi is Mid July - Thanksgiving they are a huge part of our bouquets.
We grow 3-4 successive plantings and every seed is individually direct sow lovingly by Alex :-) more than 5,000 in total!
We almost exclusively grow hybrid types bred specifically for the floral trade. These varieties are pollen free (so they don’t make a mess on your kitchen table!) they are long lasting and are nice size for bouquets.
Every year I get a few brides keen on them as the focus bloom for weddings and of course we are always game for that!
I personally love the green eye varieties the most, but the fluffy teddy type doubles are also great! Loads of people love the dark chocolate ones as well. We are trying three new varieties this year along with our favourites. Always keen to find a new favourite.
What colours are your favourite?
One of our ‘top 5’ focus blooms we grow thousands of stems a year in lots of gorgeous colours!
These beautiful blooms are easy to grow but do require very specific method. We grow most of them in hoop houses for best quality blooms in 3 or 4 different successions. We cut the first blooms in late April and the last in July.
They a a critical one for wedding work but as they also have amazingly long (10 days) vase life they are also a common on in our market bouquets as well!
This year we are adding three new colours to the mix and we are excited to see what these ones look like!
I am particularly fond of the dark pink and orange ones, but they are all great 😊
For the love of peonies! We love them so much in fact that they have a dedicated house.
We did a big (for us!) planting of 400 peonies in the fall of 2021 and in 2024 Brad built a caterpillar tunnel to cover 200 of these. They take 3 years to get to full production. However after that they can last decades! As you can likely imagine this was a pretty substantial investment for the future at the time :-)
The goal was to have peonies for mothers day. In 2025 we came close, with the first flowering the week after mother day! We have made some changes and are crossing our fingers that this year we will :-) come see us mother’s day weekend for our flower festival to see if we succeed.
We grow lots in the field as well and now have more than 800 plants, in 9 varieties of assorted styles and colours.
Red charm is my favourite as it is so huge fully and the deepest rich red and smells amazing. Not all peonies smell much actually. Coral charm is hot on its heels for the amazing way it changes colour from a pretty bright pink to a pale coral as it opens.
We dry loads of them as well so you can find them in our dried bouquets often :-).
Do you love them as much as we do?
Phlox is a beautiful bouquet filler that adds lovely texture. It is a long lived easy to grow perennial flower and it comes in lots of colours!
We find that the different varieties also have different flowering times so they naturally create diversity at different times in the garden.
Long lasting in the vase but I also use lots for events as they have such a romantic vibe…. what is better for a wedding?
One of my favourite varieties is called sherbet and it is such a cool combination of pink and green blooms.
