Trainings offered:

safeTALK

safeTALK is a half-day alertness workshop that prepares anyone over the age of 15, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a su***de-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of su***de don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognize these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources, such as caregivers trained in ASIST. Since its development in 2006, safeTALK has been used in over 20 countries around the world, and more than 200 selectable video vignettes have been produced to tailor the program’s audio-visual component for diverse audiences. safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of su***de-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert su***de risks. Workshop features:
•Presentations and guidance from a LivingWorks registered trainer
•Access to support from a local community resource person
•Powerful audiovisual learning aids
•The simple yet effective TALK steps: Tell, Ask, Listen, and KeepSafe
•Hands-on skills practice and development

safeTALK helps expand the reach of su***de intervention skills in communities around the world. ASIST- Applied Su***de Intervention Skills Training

Virtually anyone age 16 or older, regardless of prior experience or training, can become an ASIST-trained caregiver. Developed in 1983 and regularly updated to reflect improvements in knowledge and practice, ASIST is the world’s leading su***de intervention workshop. During the two-day interactive session, participants learn to intervene and help prevent the immediate risk of su***de. Over 1,000,000 people have taken the workshop, and studies have proven that the ASIST method helps reduce suicidal feelings for those at risk. Workshop features:
•Presentations and guidance from two LivingWorks registered trainers
•A scientifically proven intervention model
•Powerful audiovisual learning aids
•Group discussions
•Skills practice and development
•A balance of challenge and safety

ASK- Assessing for Su***de in Kids

This one-day workshop is meant for professional helpers working with or caring for children who want to learn more about protective and risk factors for su***de in youngsters from kindergarten to middle-school. Topics covered include a review of the research based evidence for su***de behavior in young children; a research-based definition of suicidality in children; a holistic perspective of the interaction between trait factors including genetics, personality, etc and environmental factors that can result in strengthening protective factors and helping to reduce risk factors for su***de; key questions helpers need to ask in order to understand these effects; research on a child's conceptual understanding of death and su***de and how this developmental factor may impact risk for su***de; personality traits commonly seen in children at risk of su***de; issues to consider when addressing su***de directly with a child; and how to support cooperative help-seeking with parents and caregivers for a child at risk. This workshop involves small and large group discussion and work with case studies. Participants receive a workbook, wallet card, and certificate of competion. NOTE: The ASK Workshop builds a knowledge base specific to child su***de that supports the skills learned in safeTALK and ASIST. Participants are encouraged to attend safeTALK or ASIST prior to attending The ASK.Workshop.

We are excited to announce we have scheduled our first open workshop of 2023. On Friday, January 27, 2023 we are excited to offer the “ASK” Workshop (Assessing for Su***de in Kids) workshop in Sioux Lookout, ON. The “ ASK” Workshop is a one-day, evidence-informed and highly interactive su***de prevention training. Learn from informative video, mini-lectures, and group discussions. Apply and practice as you learn with case studies and guided simulations. Leave with tools and templates you can integrate into your practice immediately.

* Learn about the risk factors and warning flags signalling that a child may be at risk of su***de.
* Practice using an evidence based brief screening tool that anyone can use to match a child who needs support or help to the most appropriate helper.
* Benefit from working with a group of passionate and experienced colleagues who share their unique perspectives.
* Learn from an experienced facilitator using current wisdom from clinical practice and published research.

The cost for this workshop is $175, plus HST. This cost includes participant workbook and materials, light breakfast, nutritional snacks, lunch, and certification. Please know that there a pre workshop reading for participant to complete prior to attending the workshop. There is a group rate available. Recommended pre-workshop preparation is attendance at a basic su***de awareness program or brief su***de gatekeeping training such as safeTALK, LivingWorks Start, QPR, or similar.
