People are being connected with family doctors or nurse practitioners faster than ever before. Every week, about 4,000 people in BC get connected to a care provider.
We’re welcoming new doctors and nurses quicker than other provinces. And we’re taking strong action to train more people for great jobs in health care, close to home. SFU will open a new medical school in 2026, and we're adding more seats to other types of health care training programs. We’re also making it faster and easier for internationally trained nurses to join BC's health care workforce.
There’s more to do, but it’s starting to make a difference. BC has more doctors and nurse practitioners in place to care for people. Surgery backlogs are gone. And more people are accessing health and cancer care faster and closer to home.

Today the Province, the shíshálh Nation and the Waterfront Protection Coalition came together for an appreciation gathering here during the UBCM meetings in Vancouver. Since the Plan was introduced by the previous government, all parties have worked collaboratively to make it better, and they deserve all our appreciation.

Climate Preparedness and Adaptation 09/18/2024

Exciting news for our communities!

I'm proud to share that the Province is stepping up to improve our resilience against climate change. With approximately $56 million allocated to 65 communities across British Columbia, we are investing in disaster risk resilience and climate-adaptation projects that will help protect our residents and environment.

As Minister Bowinn Ma stated, "Climate change is no longer a future concern; it's happening now." This funding will empower local governments to tackle vulnerabilities and make informed decisions for a sustainable future.

One notable project includes a significant investment of $1.2 million to support the Shishálh Nation ‘s Lower Crown Reservoir project in the Sunshine Coast Regional District

This initiative will enhance water security by capturing water from Chapman Creek, ensuring our communities have access to this vital resource.

Together, we can build a stronger, more resilient British Columbia. Let’s embrace these changes and work towards a sustainable future for all!

People who rely on certain medications will soon have those costs covered as BC and Canada work together to pay for more prescriptions. British Columbia has become the first province in Canada to sign a pharmacare agreement with the federal government.
Soon the costs of more diabetes medication and hormone replacement therapy for people experiencing menopause will be taken care of. This is on top of prescription birth control, which is already free.

I want to take a moment to shine a spotlight on the incredible work being done by the Sunshine Coast Division of Family Practice.

Today, we proudly honour Captain ( N ) ( R ) Ret'd Stewart Alsgard as the recipient of the King Charles III Coronation Medal. This prestigious recognition is awarded to those who have made significant contributions to Canada, and Stewart’s dedication to our community is nothing short of extraordinary. As the former Mayor of Powell River for 12 years, Stewart has been a tireless advocate for truth and reconciliation, a steadfast ally to the Tla'amin Nation, and instrumental in the creation of the Community Accord. He is deeply respected for his 28 years of service in the Navy and his enduring commitment to our region.

We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Elder Elsie Paul for her blessing, former Tla'amin Chief Maynard Harry, and former City Councillor Aaron Pinch for their kind and thoughtful words about Stewart. A special thank you to all those who came out to celebrate, including the Brooks Secondary students, who—under the direction of teacher Steven Cramaro—played a beautiful rendition of O Canada on their trumpets. And a big thank you to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #164 for allowing us to host this event.

In a touching surprise, Stewart Alsgard presented MLA Nicholas Simons with his own King Charles III Coronation Medal, recognizing Nicholas for his years of dedicated work as a representative of the Government of British Columbia.

This award represents the highest level of recognition for public service under King Charles III's reign, and Stewart Alsgard’s legacy will continue to inspire us all.
