How long are you willing to wait?
Every day I talk to people who are trying to be proactive about their health.
They’re researching peptides.
They’re taking turmeric.
They’re adding creatine.
They’re investing in supplements, exercise programs, and biohacking strategies.
But when I ask a simple question, most of them don’t know the answer.
“Are you actually absorbing what you’re taking?”
Because before we talk about what to add, shouldn’t we know what’s happening inside your cells?
Are you waiting for your doctor to mention it?
Your nurse practitioner?
Your chiropractor?
Your naturopathic doctor?
What if I told you that more than 1.8 million people around the world have already measured this?
Does it surprise you that something this important still isn’t part of the conversation most people are having about their health?
What if there was an independent risk factor for heart disease that you could measure with a simple blood test?
What if it was already available?
And what if nobody had ever offered it to you?
That’s exactly what’s happening.
The good news is you don’t have to wait.
You can find out where you stand, and more importantly, you can learn what to do about it.
So I’ll ask you again:
How long are you willing to wait?

If you’re in perimenopause or menopause or well past the age where you had your last period it’s never been more important to be your own health advocate. What do I mean by health advocate? It means when you show up at your doctor for a yearly annual or when you wanna talk about bone health or brain health or heart health you need to know what to ask your doctor about because there’s a very very strong likelihood that your doctor may not be specially trained in supporting women in midlife remember menopause is just an anniversary but your life post ovarian shut down continues on for 10 to 20 to 30 years and you want to make darn sure that you’re working with somebody who understands your unique needs!! I’ve been doing this for over 25 years. And I can show you how this can work for you! Ageing poorly is unnecessary. Reach out if you want to know more.

One of the statements that stayed with me from today came from Dr. Kelly Casperson:

“You are not broken.”

What really caught my attention was the conversation around dementia and women’s brain health.

We spend a lot of time joking about hot flashes, but what I learned today is that they may be telling us something important. Emerging research suggests that the more severe a woman’s hot flashes, the greater her risk of future cardiovascular disease.

That got my attention.

We also discussed dementia, which is expected to become the leading cause of death for women in Australia and is likely to become an even bigger issue here in North America as our population ages.
The message was to pay attention.

To ask questions.

To understand that hormones affect far more than reproduction. They influence our brains, our hearts, our bones, our blood vessels, and ultimately how we age.

One of the themes throughout the day was that women need better information, not dismissal. Too many women are still being told that symptoms are “just part of aging.”

I think we can do better than that.

The more you understand your body, the more empowered you become to make informed decisions about your health.

And perhaps that’s what Dr. Casperson meant when she said, “You are not broken.”

Maybe we simply need better information.

Menopause symptoms like brain fog, hot flashes, fatigue, skin changes, and digestive issues are often treated individually, but they’re connected to deeper patterns in the body.

Instead of focusing only on the “branches” (your symptoms), it can be more effective to look at what’s happening at the “roots.”

In this approach, your body is viewed like a tree 🌳
Symptoms are the leaves and branches, while the root system represents foundational areas like digestion, absorption, elimination, and overall internal balance.

When we support the foundation, we often see changes across multiple symptoms at once, rather than chasing each one individually.

This is the basis of my root-cause approach to menopause care: understanding how interconnected systems influence how you feel day to day.

If you’re noticing digestive changes in menopause, it’s important to understand that this stage of life often amplifies what was already happening in the body.

In the gut, we tend to see a natural decline in microbial diversity over time, or using the garden analogy, fewer “flowers” in the garden and less resilience overall.

Things like antibiotics, stress, and dietary patterns can further shift that balance.

The long-term focus isn’t just about quick fixes. It’s about supporting the gut ecosystem through all three key layers: reducing unwanted overgrowth, replenishing beneficial microbes, and consistently feeding them with the right inputs.

That includes things like fermented foods, and a good quality soluble fibre to help nourish the beneficial bacteria in the gut.

And because everyone’s experience in menopause is different, a personalized approach to nutrition and gut support can make a big difference in understanding what your body actually needs.

When we talk about gut health, it can be helpful to shift the focus from identifying individual “bugs” to looking at the overall terrain.

In the garden analogy, it’s not always essential to pinpoint every specific microbe. In some cases, testing can be useful, but the bigger picture is often about the environment those microbes are living in.

Whether we’re talking about bacterial overgrowth or other imbalances like parasites, the goal is the same: creating an internal environment that supports beneficial microbes while making it harder for unwanted overgrowth to thrive.

That’s where the “garden” approach comes in.

We work on encouraging more of what supports the gut (think beneficial bacteria, digestive support, and a nutrient-rich foundation from food) rather than only focusing on what we’re trying to eliminate.

SIBO has been getting a lot of attention lately, but the real question is: what’s actually going on in the gut?

Instead of thinking of it as just a “condition to fix,” it can be more helpful to view the gut as a living ecosystem. Most of you know my favourite analogy is to think of the gut as a garden, and in a garden, balance matters.

When things feel off, symptoms like bloating, gas, and irregular digestion are often signals that the internal environment needs support.

Quick fixes have their place, but for long-term gut health, it’s about restoring balance in the terrain of the gut.
