May 5th is the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirit people. Community Arts Mentorship Program acknowledges that this crisis is rooted in colonization, racism and the ongoing systems that continue to harm First Nation, Metis and Inuit people.
You can recognize this day by:
- Wearing red or displaying a red dress
- Learn from First Nation, Metis and Inuit resources
- Familiarize yourself with the 231 Calls to Justice from the 2019 MMIWG2S inquiry report
- Donate funds to grassroots organizations and support mutual aid efforts
- Amplify the voices of Indigenous people
It is important that we do not let today be just a symbol. This is a day of reflection and to take meaningful steps forward. We all have an important job to do in order to create a world where Indigenous women, girls and Two-Spirit people are valued, safe and never forgotten.
If you or someone you know requires support you can contact the 24/7 support line at 1-844-413-6649. This service is free of charge and offers services in Inuktitut, Anishnaabemowin (Ojibway), Cree, English and French.
