June 21st is National Indigenous People’s Day. June is also Indigenous History Month. This is a day dedicated to celebrating, reflecting and honouring the heritage, traditions and cultures of First Nations, Inuit and Métis Peoples.

It can be as simple as reading a book, listening to music, supporting local Indigenous artists, and listening to Indigenous People and their experiences. It is a great time to learn and uplift as we continue our journey of reconciliation.

Aamjiwnaang is hosting the 63rd annual Powow today. Check out their Facebook for more details.

Today, Friday June 19th 2026 is Juneteenth.

What is Juneteenth you may ask? It “marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.“

It is a time to celebrate these communities and help uplift them in any ways that we can. Take the time to listen to their experiences and learn. We recognize their resilience and strength and we must do our best to stay informed and to not become ignorant. Happy Juneteenth!
