Pure Energy Drum Lessons provides instruction in both Rudimental drumming as well as drum set. Blue Devils won High Drums both years he marched with them.
Shawn Bryan is a two-time member of the World Champion Blue Devils Drum & Bugle Corps from Concord, California. He then studied jazz drum set at Humber College in Toronto, Ontario. He has performed across Ontario, Quebec, and The United States. He was the Director and Instructor of the St. Clair Colts Drum Line from 2012-2018 and instructed the drumlines of the Sarnia Sea Cadets Drum Line from 2012-2017. LEARN TO PLAY THE DRUMLINE WAY
There is a whole lot of amazing in this video. Two that stick out: 1. ‘Cheese’ refers to a stroke which is both bounced (a ruff) and has a grace note in front of it (a flam). Check out the flam/cheese after the two-handed stick spin. That is some extremely difficult playing, and they stay clean. 2. The player in the right of the screen is giving a good example of the Marty Hurley pinky grip method. Standard traditional grip but the pinky finger is tightly bent on all knuckles and pulled back as far as possible. This is an extreme version of the tradition grip, and takes a very long time to master. The benefit is massive kinetic energy, like a tightened spring, waiting to be released. Because of my background I do teach drumset differently than most teachers. Most teachers do not spend much time on the rudiments. However, half the time playing a drumset is spent playing fills between sections of the songs. If you don't spend time working on the ability to play intricate things with your hands, what are you going to play when it comes time to play a fill?
This method results in what appears to be a slower start for the first year, but because the student ends up with a much broader foundation and understanding of the instrument, after the seemingly slow beginning, the student with a foundation in rudiments then achieves much faster results and can attain much higher results then those students without a solid background in rudimental drumming. Rudimental studies also facilitate reading music notation better and faster than strictly reading drum charts. After a minimum facility is mastered with the rudiments, I add the drumset. I teach on a two week cycle. The first week is rudiments, the 2nd week is drumset. The reason for this is that all together there's just too much to cover in one lesson. By teaching on a two week cycle, There's plenty of time to cover all the items needed to cover each week.
