Aspen trees that look like an entire forest are sometimes actually just ONE living organism.
Groups of aspens grow from a shared underground root system, meaning every tree trunk can be genetically identical.

One famous aspen colony called Pando is considered one of the largest living organisms on Earth, estimated to weigh thousands of tons and possibly be thousands of years old.

Here’s your 🌳 Tree Fact Tuesday:

Some trees can “warn” each other about danger. When insects start eating a tree’s leaves, the tree releases chemicals into the air. Nearby trees detect those chemicals and begin producing bitter-tasting compounds in their own leaves before the insects reach them. It’s basically a forest-wide warning system. 🌲🍃
Scientists have observed this in trees like willows, poplars, and acacias. Pretty wild for organisms that don’t even have brains. 😏

Researchers have found that certain trees change how they use water after surviving a dry period, basically “learning” to be more efficient next time.
