The Mystic Series of Dahlia: New Zealand’s Dark-Leaved Beauties
Among the many introductions that have transformed modern dahlias, few have made as dramatic an impact as the Mystic Series. DINKY’S PUDDLE AT TREBAH GARDEN - This wonderful pool sits in the middle of the valley at Trebah Garden surrounded by tree ferns, palm trees, and bamboo. Note the prominent use of our BC native skunk cabbage (Lysichiton americanum) which we have each year in our native plant section. The shrub with red flowers you’ll see on the hill is Chilean flame tree (Embothrium coccineum) which we wish we had every year. Note the wonderful repetition of burgundy beech trees at the top of the valley which are part of the shelter belt that helps to enhance the warm microclimate of the garden. Enjoy! Trebah Garden

SECRET OF SUCCESS FOR SUMMER PLANTING - It can be hard to water new plantings in dry summer soils because dry soil becomes hydrophobic and resists the pe*******on of water so that water will not sink down into the root ball of your plant but travel across the surface and away.
The trick is to take the excess soil from your planting and build a circular d**e around your plant that creates a bowl that you can fill with water. Then you know the water will sink straight down into the root ball of your new treasure and keep it nice and moist for summer establishment.
You can also use this trick with existing plantings that are having trouble. I planted these hellebores in my garden under the boughs of a large conifer. They’ve been having a bit of a tough time establishing these last couple years and with this drought, it’s making it worse. So I’ve built circular d**es around them to help me supply them with water.
Use this trick and you can plant all summer long!
MEXICAN FLEABANE AT TREBAH - karvinskianus is a marvellous little plant with incredible flower power that will bloom from spring through summer into the fall with masses of little flowers in pink and white. It is super useful for planting in walls where it will self seed into crevices. It is extremely drought tolerant and also popular with pollinators. Trebah Garden

CALIFORNIA TREE POPPY - coulteri is now in bud and bloom. Its huge flowers look like fried eggs. Plant this wonder in hot dry sunny spots with crummy soil.
