Dealing with a stiff lower back after sitting or training? Enter the Cat-Cow.
When managing spinal health, we want to introduce gentle, controlled movement rather than forcing aggressive, static stretches. Moving your spine rhythmically through flexion and extension helps promote local blood flow and reduces structural stiffness.
How to do it: On all fours, slowly arch your back toward the ceiling, then let your belly sink toward the floor.
Focus on: Linking your movement to your breath. Move segment by segment, starting from your tailbone and finishing at your neck.

Why does your lower back constantly feel stiff? Often, it isn't a back problem at all. In an integrated system, a stiff lower back is frequently forced to overcompensate for tight hip flexors.
Today we are starting at the base with the Iliopsoas Stretch. Tight Iliopsoas/Hip Flexors can pull the spine forwards and rotate the pelvis forwards; this posture and forward shear force can aggravate the compensatory back muscles.
How to do it: Kneel on one knee with your other leg in front of you, as shown. Keep your abdominals tight while pushing your pelvis forwards
Focus on: Keeping your abdominals tight to avoid arching your back while doing the stretch
This week, for exercises we love, we are highlighting the Landmine Leaning Lunge.
While lunges are a staple for lower-body strength, using the landmine setup allows you to lean directly into the resistance. This angled load forces your core and hips to stabilize differently, building single-leg strength and joint durability without overloading your spine.
Why we love it:
By altering the angle of resistance, the landmine leaning lunge reduces axial loading on the spine while heavily targeting the glutes, quads, and lateral hip stabilizers. It is an exceptional, functional tool for improving single-leg power, balance, and knee stability—essential for navigating uneven terrain, trail running, and preparing for mountain sports.

Does your knee crunch, click, or creak when you squat or walk downstairs?
That sound is officially called crepitus. While it can sound alarming, it’s actually very common—and in most cases, it isn’t a sign that your joint is wearing out.
Why do knees make noise?
Knee crepitus usually happens for simple, non-threatening reasons:
Gas bubbles: Tiny bubbles releasing pressure inside the joint fluid.
Tendon movement: A tendon or ligament sliding smoothly over a bony landmark as the joint moves.
Cartilage contact: Minor roughness along the joint surface under load.
Should you be concerned?
The noise itself rarely correlates to structural damage. However, if the clicking or crunching is accompanied by pain, swelling, catching, or a feeling of instability, that is your cue to have it properly evaluated.
What can you do about it?
You don’t need to stop moving. In fact, keeping the joint active and supported is key:
1️⃣ Build the surrounding tissue: Strengthening the quads, hamstrings, and glutes helps manage how forces are distributed through the knee joint.
2️⃣ Focus on movement quality: Working on hip stability and ankle mobility helps the knee track smoothly without taking unnecessary load.
3️⃣ Keep moving: Controlled loading through a full range of motion keeps joints lubricated and healthy.

This week for exercises we love, we are highlighting the Leg Press Machine.
While it’s a gym member favourite for safely building quad strength and lower-body durability, setting it up correctly makes all the difference for your knees and lower back.
If you are using the machine, follow this quick setup:
Adjust Your Backrest: Set the seat angle so your hips stay firmly against the pad throughout the entire movement without rounding your lower back at the bottom.
Place Your Feet: Position your feet hip-width apart in the center of the sled so your knees track in line with your second and third toes as you bend.
Unlock the Load: Press through your mid-foot and heels to drive the weight up slightly, then disengage the safety handles on both sides to free the carriage.
Control the Lowering Phase: Lower the weight steadily toward your chest, bending your knees to roughly 90 degrees while keeping your heels flat against the platform.
Drive and Lock Out Safely: Push through your whole foot to return to the starting position, stopping just short of locking out your knees. When your set is complete, re-engage the safety handles before releasing the weight.

Because the leg press stabilizes your spine, it allows you to load the quadriceps directly with minimal stress, making it a reliable, year-round tool whether you are recovering from an injury, building foundational strength, or prepping for mountain sports.

British Columbia Day Holiday Hours
We are operating on modified hours for the upcoming August long weekend. On Monday, August 3rd, our facility schedule will be adjusted as follows: Staff Support & Minors (18 and under): 9:00 am – 3:00 pm Adult Members (19+): 24-hour access remains available using your key fob or the member app.
Regular clinic and staff schedules will resume on Tuesday, August 4th.

🎾 Think Tennis Elbow is only for tennis players? Think again.
Despite the name, fewer than 5% of people diagnosed with "Tennis Elbow" (Lateral Epicondylitis) ever step onto a tennis court. Most people who seek treatment for this condition develop it at work, on the job site, or during daily seasonal activities.
What Is Tennis Elbow?
It is micro-tearing and chronic inflammation in the tendon connecting your forearm muscles to the outside of your elbow. Every time you extend your wrist, grip tightly, or twist a handle, that tendon absorbs the force.
