LGBTQ+ STEM DAY 11/07/2023

The international day of 2SLGBTQIAP+ people in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) ( see https://prideinstem.org/lgbtstemday/ ) is held every year on November 18. It is a day to celebrate the contributions of q***r and trans people to STEM fields and highlight the barriers they continue to face. With support from the faculties of science and applied science and engineering, we will be hosting a public seminar by a well known climate activist and social media celebrity. Mckenzie Margarethe () will be here in Regina to present a seminar on the climate crisis, ocean conservation and the interplay between science and politics. More information is below.

The talk will be held in RIC 119 at 2:30pm on Friday November 17 and everyone is invited. This is a public talk and no background knowledge of science is assumed or required. If you wish to attend on zoom, we ask that you please fill in this form and we will email you the zoom link the morning of the talk. This form is not required for those who wish to attend in person:

The Gayest Place on Earth - And Why We Need to Protect It!

Abstract:
The climate crisis is violently colliding with 2SLGBTQIA+ rights. With unprecedented times before us, it’s difficult to remember that the q***r community has always risen above. Environmental scientists and policymakers are increasingly feeling more comfortable expressing harmful ideologies, even allowing these beliefs to creep into climate legislation. This seems odd when the place we are attempting to preserve is made up of over 70% ocean---the q***rest place on Earth! Join us to discuss what makes the ocean so q***r and why we need to protect it! Mckenzie Margarethe will go over the history of alt-right conservative views mixing with the ocean community, and how this mix has fostered a toxic environment within both groups that is only growing stronger. To leave us with some hope, Mckenzie will discuss all the ways you can bring in a wave of change!

Bio:
Mckenzie Margarethe (any pronouns) is a marine science communicator with a background in ocean conservation. As a q***r person in STEM, they continually work to increase minority representation, particularly in climate activism. Mckenzie seeks to bring intersectional climate solutions to her audience, and commonly discusses sustainable fishing, the blue economy, corporate accountability, and more. Through educational content, Mckenzie hopes to increase access to science and empower others to act meaningfully and thoughtfully in climate activism.
