This is how you channel an ice dam.
You can use hot water from your tap and a hose.. just start from the edge so you don’t add more water above that pools behind while cutting channel.

If you have extensive ice damming - one option is to cut channels to let water (from snow melt) off the roof.
Doesn’t take long for the sun to burn the ice dam off.
