Today, Jen from Community First Campaigns and Dylan from Rambow Consulting Group had a tour of the Red Deer Food Bank, and delivered a donation from our grocery sweepstake!
Our lucky winner of the grocery sweepstake - Emily T. - selected the Red Deer Food Bank to receive $500 from Community First Campaigns! She also selected Central Alberta Co-op for her grocery prize.
Central Alberta Co-op gave us a discount on the gift cards for the prize, and donated the difference back to the Red Deer Food Bank for a total donation of $625! Thank you Central Alberta Co-op!
We learned a lot about Red Deer Food Bank on our tour. Did you know that they have invested in hydroponics in order to grow fresh produce year-round? We saw the seacans where they grow this food, and utilize AI to connect with 600 other hydroponics farms to share real-time data to improve their farming. They can grow up to a million cherry tomatoes a year!
Their previous model relied heavily on collection - their new model focuses on entrepreneurial endeavours and sustainable farming to create more reliable food security. They are a zero waste facility, and also run a unique food truck program that helps them bring in crucial funding to continue to run their intricate organization.
Still, just last year they collected 1.6 million pounds of food to support more than 30,500 individuals - double the amount of people supported in 2020. 40% of their clients are children. They also support many clients with income tax documents, identification, and financial literacy in order to help people gain financial independence.
