Meet Dean Ward (Highview Photo) - An Artlogo client and the man behind Highview Photo ❤❤

Dean’s love of photography began in junior high, watching his first black-and-white image appear in a darkroom tray under the red glow of a safelight. His early subjects included family, friends on ski trips, dogs, and anything with a motor or propeller. By 22, Dean was a licensed commercial pilot for both fixed-wing and rotary aircraft.

While he primarily uses a digital camera now, Dean’s passion for film photography endures. His collection of large-format film images grows yearly. "Shooting on film is like listening to music on vinyl; it just has more soul," he says.

With his skills and entrepreneurial spirit, Dean opened Highview Photo in 1993, a one-hour photo lab on Gaetz Avenue in Red Deer. The 1,000 sq ft location featured a drive-thru and processed over 80 rolls of film daily. Ten months later, he met Joni, a farm girl who soon joined him in running the business. Together, they discovered that working side-by-side was the perfect fit.

In 1998, Highview Photo expanded significantly, adding custom picture framing and a modern photography studio. Though no longer processing film, the business has evolved and remains a landmark on South Hill.

Small business is about personal connections—offering a service, hearing stories, and turning customers into friends.
