My how things have changed for the better!

Check out these instructions given to new nursing moms in 1968! 😱

I was born in 1955, when only 20% of babies in the US were breastfed. Like most babies back then, I was formula fed. 🍼

I grew up and had 6 babies (2 were born in the ‘70s, 2 in the ‘80s, and 2 in the ‘90s).

I nursed all six of my babies. I fell in love with breastfeeding and wanted to help others moms, so I became a La Leche League Leader in 1978 and an IBCLC in 1990.

I’ve seen a LOT of changes in breastfeeding trends over the years.

Here’s some info about how breastfeeding rates in the US have evolved over tge decades:

*In the ‘70s, about 25% of babies were breastfed.
*In the ‘80s, breastfeeding initiation rates increased to around 50%.
*In the ‘90s, rates went up to nearly 65%.
*From 2000 until today, rates kept climbing and now, over 80% of new moms start out nursing their newborns. 💜

Over the decades, there have been SO many barriers to successful breastfeeding.

This 1968 ‘instruction sheet’ for new mothers explains a lot about why so many moms who genuinely wanted to breastfeed gave up and turned to formula early on. 😢
