Our is the Portulacaria afra. It is commonly known as Porkbush or Elephant's Food in English, Spekboom or Olifantskos in Afrikaans, iNtelez or isiDondwane or isAmbilane or isiCococo in isiZulu.
This evergreen succulent shrub or small tree can reach 2 to 5 metres in height, with round succulent leaves on red stems and star-shaped pink flowers in late winter to spring.

Resilient to drought and fire, it thrives in warm regions from the Eastern Cape to Limpopo, often browsed by game and domestic stock. Perfect for succulent gardens and bonsai, it tolerates full sunshine or semi-shade in dry areas, enduring moderate frost when mature.
