***𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐀𝐋 𝐑𝐄𝐋𝐄𝐀𝐒𝐄***

We celebrate the official release of a short movie showcasing the important work of the Inuit Marine Guardians in Taloyoak.

The Marine Guardians are the eyes and the ears of the community on what takes place in the marine ecosystem. They run a marine monitoring program to study the marine wildlife, fish, and even the zooplankton and algae dwelling in the ocean. They use hydrophones to record the sounds undersea, and underwater cameras to monitor the seafloor. Their effort contributes to collecting crucial information from the sea that will help the local HTA, Taloyoak Umarulirigut Association, to take on conservation efforts and the protection of the Aqviqtuuq waters.

The Marine Guardians mentor the next generation of Guardians by taking them on the land and the sea, passing on Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit and strengthening youth and Elders connection. The country food they harvest contributes to feed people in need with limited access to the land.

Thanks to Lou-William Théberge for the camera work.
Thanks to Frangin.co for the post-production.
Thanks to our funder DFO for their precious contribution to the program and continue support to the community

If you like, please share widely!

Today we remember the past and celebrate the resilience and memory of the survivors of residential schools. Let's honour them and help each other in building a bright future for the next generations.

The Kugaaruk HTA has launched last summer an Inuit Guardians Program; the eyes and the ears of the community!

The Guardians patrol the land and the sea twice a week and report their observations and animal sightings to the board.

Last week, they took on a 'short' fishing trip to Kellett River located 50km south from the community. The fish caught were given to community members in need.

Qujannamiik Guardians and KHTA, long live the program! Special thanks to Abel Aqqaq for the training!

Beautiful moments shared with James Simonee at the Festival de Cinema de la Ville de Quebec for the premiere of Ujjirijavut!!

The 30min short film portray the experience of Inuit from Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet) witnessing the rapid development of the mining industry. Ujjirijavut is a testimony of resiliency, human rights and before all, the love of the people for their territory.

The premiere marked the official tour of the movie in Film Festivals. Thanks to Isuma and Uvagut TV, the movie will play on television throughout Nunavut and in Canada.

Qujannamiik to folks at the FCVQ, to Nunavut Film, Isuma Distribution, and our funders.

Stay connected as more will come🎥🙏

Quick visit in Naujaat launching a marine monitoring program. No programs can take off without the contribution of Elders who generously shared their knowledge of the area. Narwhal are huge, floe edge is receeding rapidly, springs are unusual these days. Passion for the land and a culture of sharing never changed.

More to come, job offers are out for field assistants this summer. Youth summer jobs will be advertise soon.
