Terry Clarke, who'll be joining me at the Port on September 14, is well known around the world from his work with, among other notables, Jim Hall, Oscar Peterson, and the Boss Brass. He's regarded by many as Canada's greatest jazz drummer. I've had the good fortune to play with Terry over the years in all kinds of different situations, often with Don Thompson. Along with the rest of the world, I loved listening to David Sanborn. Straight To The Heart and Upfront were my two faves. I heard him play live twice, both times in 1983. Once was in the Bob Mintzer big band, at 7th Ave. South (w/ the Breckers, Will Lee, Peter Erskine, Don Grolnick, Lew Soloff, Laurie Frink, et al). Incredible. The second time was when I attended a master class with Dave Liebman. Mr. Sanborn was there as a student. There were about 4 or 5 of us if I recall correctly. We took turns playing on Aebersold records and having Liebman give us the gears. I thought it was just incredibly cool that someone as successful and awesome as Sanborn was willing to open himself up to that kind of thing. He was also just an absolute mensch.
