We acknowledge and express our deep gratitude to the Qualicum First Nation on whose traditional lands we work and learn.

Shoots with Roots offers place-based, curriculum-linked nature education to local elementary school students, in the inspiring setting of Milner Gardens & Woodland. We offer a series of five interconnected field trips, free of charge, to local elementary schools. Participating classes each attend twice between September and December, and three times between February and June. Each visit introduces

Have you ever wished that adults could participate in Shoots with Roots? Or perhaps you’re a parent or grandparent looking for an educational outing for your family?
We are piloting our first Shoots with Roots Family Program this summer! Children from ages 5-12 and their adults can participate together in a morning of hands-on science and forest explorations in the inspiring setting of Milner Gardens & Woodland.

Our first session will focus on native tree and plant identification. Learn why a pine cone usually isn’t a pine cone, get up close and personal with nature in “Meet a Tree”, play our active Plant ID game on a forest trail, and learn a fun and artistic way to record images of the plants you’ve learned along the way.

Our first session takes place Thursday, August 3rd, 9:30 - 12:30. For more information, check out our website: https://milnergardens.viu.ca/school-programs-and-day-camps

There are still FOUR spaces in our daycamp on Friday, June 30th. Camp runs 9:30 - 2:30 and is suitable for ages 6 - 10.

We'll be playing games to stretch our nature observation skills, exploring the forest and garden, and making journals to record our observations and memories in. We'll have free time in the Food Garden... and maybe even climb a tree.

Check our website for more details about how to register! https://milnergardens.viu.ca/school-programs-and-day-camps

Each class that attends Shoots with Roots completes a Circle Journal project throughout the year. Mrs. Fletcher's class completed theirs today and did a particularly excellent job! Check out a year of Shoots with Roots, as the kids remember it:

A Mason Bee Emerges 04/26/2023

After today's group left, Pam checked the mason bees and found one emerging from their cocoon.
So, she filmed it. Enjoy this quiet little video of the first few minutes of an adult mason bee's adventures in the world.

Today’s class counted pollinators in the Grieg Rhododendron Species Garden. They learned how to tell flies and bees apart and then counted how many of each they could find on flowers.
