HEY THERE! Have a ou heard about the VILC (Vancouver Island Leadership Conference) that is coming up soon???
It's that time of the year where my heart flutters with pride for the students about to start their high school journey and those that are about to attend their commencement from Kwalikum Secondary School. It is at this time that I particularly remember a very small group of parents, community members and school staff that came together and worked very hard to prevent the only high school in Qualicum Beach from closing so that our children could be educated in their community. There were many obstacles that we overcame. So many parents that doubted our efforts and could not see past the current status of their children's education. Those that said it didn't matter to them, their kids were not attending KSS at the time. Those children are going to attend KSS and many are going to graduate from this high school. I'm glad we fought to keep KSS from closing their doors to future graduates. Many thanks in particular to the members of the self named group, Oceanside Communities for Quality Education (O.C.Q.E.) for their endless hours of constant meetings, public forums and research. We worked hard and it was worth it! Thanks to the many supporters including the Town of Qualicum, private businesses and community groups and to: Lynette Kershaw, Leona Matte, Cilla Lewenhaupt, Julie Austin, Phil Carson (R.I.P.), Tim Daniel, Mirella Trozzo, Ron Campbell, Glynis Milligan, Ross Mulligan (R.I.P.), Ruth Mandt (R.I.P.), Martin Stewart, Leona Matte, Barry Kurland and Kelly Wray. To the Grads...Congratulations from all of us!

Attention all KSS Music Program Grads:
At the end of last week, after 24 years of teaching music at Kwalikum Secondary School, Mr. Stewart has officially announced his retirement from teaching in SD69. We KSS music grads have been fortunate to experience Mr. Stewartâs amazing music program and have learned so much from him (musically and otherwise).
I know that itâs pretty last minute, but it would be great to have some former music students (and colleagues) make an appearance at the KSS Year-End Concert on Tuesday, June 2nd. The concert takes place in the KSS multi-purpose room and starts at 7pm.
If you canât make it to the concert and would like to send a short message of thanks to Mr. Stewart, or perhaps share a special memory that you have from being one of his students over the years, feel free to send me a message on here or email me at [email protected]. I will make sure that he gets the message, or maybe we can read a few messages out to him during the concert. You could also email him at [email protected] if youâd like to send him a message directly.
I have a feeling that a larger celebration may be planned for sometime in the fall to honour our wonderful music educator, but I didnât think that we could let this final concert pass without recognizing his contribution to so many of us over the years.
If any of you have ideas for a larger scale event in the fall, please send your suggestions to me or to Dan Craven. We will try to get something planned. Thanks!
And again, please spread the word on this. It would be so great to see former students, colleagues, and friends at the Year-End Concert. Help us recognize all of the wonderful things that Mr. Stewart has done for KSS, for the music community in our area, and for all of his fortunate students!
Remember way back when O.C.Q.E. suggested having a Hockey Academy at one of the high schools? Looks like that may be happening. According to the SD Information session on the 19th of Feb.
