Prince George RCMP is currently investigating a motor vehicle incident that has left one pedestrian in the hospital in serious condition.

The incident occurred on Sunday, August 9, 2026, just before 12:30 a.m. when a man was struck in northbound lane on the 1700-block of the Hart Highway. He is described as wearing a reddish coloured hoody and dark pants and was carrying a red backpack at the time of the incident.

The northbound lanes of the highway were closed for several hours with drivers being redirected down North Nechako Road as investigators analyzed the scene and spoke with witnesses

“We are currently looking to speak with anyone else who may have witnessed what occurred that evening or who may have dash camera footage of the incident or of the highway conditions immediately preceding the incident. You can contact a police officer by calling the Prince George RCMP non-emergency line at 250-561-3300,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for Prince George RCMP.

Police officers are also releasing photos of a truck believed to have been involved in the incident. It is described as an early 2000s Ford F150 Supercrew, that is a two-tone navy and grey with aftermarket running boards and oversized tires. If anyone knows where this truck is or who may have been driving it at the time of the incident, they are encouraged to contact the Prince George RCMP non-emergency line or to make an anonymous report through Northern B.C. Crime Stoppers.

This investigation remains ongoing.

In partnership with School District 57, a local high school will be hosting a live Emergency Response Team training exercise on Thursday, August 13, 2026.

The training will take place at Duchess Park Secondary School, located at 747 Winnipeg Street, from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

During the live exercise residents and businesses in the area can expect to see a large police presence (both uniformed and plain clothes officers) with various types of police vehicles parked on site. Those in the area may hear pops, loud bangs, yelling and screaming. We are advising the public in advance of this training, so they do not become alarmed at the police presence and the noise. Signage will be posted around the venue for the duration of the training.

“This training is being conducted to simulate an active threat situation and will be quite dynamic. This is a controlled training exercise, though we will be using live actors to enhance the realism of the situation. We are respectfully requesting that people do not approach the venue or the officers as it would interfere with the value of the training,” states Corporal Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for Prince George RCMP.

Drivers who have consumed drugs or alcohol have a number of options to get home safely instead of getting behind the wheel of their vehicle and endangering all other road users.

Police in Prince George are reminding drivers to make road safety a priority if you are traveling for the B.C. Day long weekend.

“We know it’s a popular weekend to travel and we want to make sure that drivers and passengers are taking all the necessary precautions to help everyone arrive at their destination safely,” states Cpl. Jennifer Cooper, Media Relations Officer for Prince George RCMP.

Here are some tips to making this long weekend a safe one on our roads:
🚗Make sure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt and is in the proper child safety restraint (car seat) for their age/weight/height. If you’re unsure about car seat safety, please check out the ICBC website on child car seats. Remember – until they are twelve (12) years old, the safest place for a child is in the back seat of a car (when available).
📱Put your phone somewhere that it is out of reach. Leave it in the trunk or backseat, somewhere that you can’t be tempted to grab it and answer a text or look up information. Let your passenger respond to messages or look up directions. In B.C. drivers are prohibited from holding, operating or watching the screen of a hand-held electronic communication device. For more information on use of electronic devices while driving, visit the Government of B.C. website.
🍹Only plan to drive when you are sober. If you will be consuming products that result in impairment (drugs, alcohol or some medications) have a backup plan if you can no longer drive safely. Have money set aside for a cab, spend the night, or phone a friend for a ride.
🕝Give yourself plenty of time to get to your destination so you are not tempted to speed or drive aggressively. Don’t forget that weather conditions, the condition of the vehicle you are driving, and whether you are towing anything can all impact the speed at which you can safely travel.
🏍️Be aware of motorcycle riders on the road and give them extra space. Motorcycles can manoeuvre more quickly and need shorter stopping distance than enclosed vehicles, meaning you need a larger space between you to keep everyone safe. According to the B.C. Highway Patrol unit, every year in B.C. there is an average of 2,400 collisions involving motorcycles.

Remember that in B.C., drivers must slow down when passing a vehicle stopped alongside the road that has flashing red, blue or yellow lights. If the posted speed limit is 80km/h or more, drivers must slow to 70 km/h. If the posted speed limit is under 80 km/h, drivers must slow to 40 km/h. If there is a second lane to move into, drivers must move to the other lane when passing vehicles with flashing lights.
