Sharing a personal project. - I rarely paint. It only tends to happen when there’s a real reason, usually when it’s for someone.
This portrait is for a vibrant friend we lost last year, and for the person who loved her most. She was full of energy, warmth, and presence. - Qualities that are impossible to fully capture, but worth trying. I recorded a few quiet piano notes to accompany the time-lapse.
Fifteen seconds of paint and sound for a life that left a much longer echo.
A last-minute script change on the die Mobiliar Festakt project left us with just a couple of weeks to rethink and redo 45 seconds of animation. It was a race against the clock. - But honestly, Some of the best ideas come from that kind of pressure. Writer Roman Riklin came up with a thrilling new plot and it was a matter of furnishing it with visual storytelling and gags. In the final stage, everyone pulled together to smooth it out. Thanks to director Nadine Imboden and producer Angéline Wilisch!
In this clip, I’m breaking down:
The Art of the Gag - Adding comedy while staying in service of the story.
The Technical Side - A look at compositing with masks to keep the workflow fast and clean.
I’ve sped up the editing and added some jazzy tunes to make this look effortless, but it took me like 200 years just to sketch this single in-between drawing. 😉
This making-of is from an incredibly special project: the Mobiliar 200th-anniversary "Festakt" at the Stadttheater Bern earlier this month.
Huge thanks to the team at die Mobiliar and the wonderful Nadine Imboden for bringing me on board for this milestone!

History in motion!
50 years after the inception of the Mobiliar Insurance in 1826, Eadweard Muybridge invents high speed photography, proving a horse's trot is in fact a run. To this day, his work remains a prime reference for animators. Here's mine, my late mother's 1957 edition (Dover) of Animals in Motion.
It feels full circle using a family heirloom to celebrate two centuries of Swiss history!
Another historic event: A departure (pun intended) of the classic sketch-of-the-accident pencil-on-graph-paper style. To befit the occasion, Jung von Matt Schweiz went with ink-on-parchment-paper! I'm grateful to die Mobiliar for the honorable opportunity.
